Satolli's English Speeches.
One characteristic of Mgr.'Satolli ia
the power of his memory. Bis duties
require him to make frequent speeches
before American congregations, and
therefore in the English language. - He
writes his speeches out in Italian, for
mulates in his own language and on
paper what he wishes to say and in just
what words he wishes' to say it, has
these speeches translated into English
by his interpreter and then commits
the English to memory. So wonderful
is his memory and so thorough his mas
, teryof detail that no one would , sus
pect from listening to his utterances
that he was not an English scholar.
Although not understanding the words
he speaks, he gives them an inflection
and a pronunciation that are nearly per
fect and proves that the power of imita
tion has been strongly cultivated within
him, for he copies every emphasis
taught him by the interpreter.-

BISMARCK AND CRISPI.
The Friendship Existing Between the Two
Men of Iron.
' The close friendship between Crispi
and Bismarck, whioh is of 20 years'
standing, is one of the most remarkable
relations I know and is sufficient proof
of Crispi's value. Crispi is aooused, but
only by people who do not know him,,
of aping Bismarck, but a glance at any
of his portraits will show that nature
had provided the similitude before ei
ther knew the other. . . ,.
The type of character is the same.
The strongly marked jaw, the spacious
brain, the eye that looks yon through
like a lance and yet is full of affection
ate welcome at need, and the expression
of inflexibility in pursuit, are common
to both; as is also the high appreciation
of authority and discipline, but beyond
this there is little resemblanoe, and their
political ideas differ entirely.
, - Crispi has been accused of being dic
tatorial. ' In his official relations be is
peremptory and exacting, and his ideas
of government . are imperative, but no
Italian minister has ever done so muoh
to put power out of the hands of the
ministry as he, or has shown so sorupu
Ions an adherence to the letter of the
constitutional law. , He is a democrat of
the strongest dye, but the king has nev
er bad a minister so absolutely deferen
tial to him as head of the state, rarely
one so profoundly respectful to him as
the symbol of law and the seat of an
thority. - '' '
The conception of a dissension be'
tween him and the crown is impossible
to any one who knows bim, and this his
majesty reoognizes. Crispi has the ndel
ity and the individuality belonging to
his Skipetar blood, and all its wild in
dependence; Bismarok, the overweening
masterliness of his Prussian stock. They
are alike in their patriotism, but as un
like as possible in their "way of under-
standing it, as in their relation to their
sovereign. Century. ; ; i ' : ' :'

A Girl ' Frightened Into Slumber From
'Which She Hal Never Awakened.
There is a girl named Marguerite
Bouyenval at Thenelles, in the north
of France, near St. Quentin, who is
reported to have been asleep for the past
11 years.' A good deal of doubt has been
thrown on this phenomenal 'slumbering
case, not only in ' Paris, but also in
Thenelles and its vicinity, where there
are two oamps. one of the believers and
the otherof those who maintain that
the so .called sleeping beauty rises at
night and has a good supper. The mat
ter has been investigated by a Parisian,
who has seen the girl and found her as
lean as a skeleton and as stiff as a
corpse, bnt still living. Her mother in
jeots milk, peptone and sometimes wine
through a broken tooth in the girl's
mouth. Marguerite Bouyenval made
away with a baby 11 years ago, and the
gendarmes were sent to her house. The
girl was so frightened at their approach
that she had an attaok of hysteria, whioh
lasted several hours, and at the end of
which she fell into a trance. The doubts
thrown on the continuation of the tranoe
have evidently been caused by the fact
that the mother of the sleeping girl has
made a good deal of money by exhibit
ing her. A local dootor,. who has ob
served the case during the 11 years, in
formed the investigator from Paris that
Marguerite Bouyenval had really been
asleep during the whole time. Occasion
ally she had hysterical cries, but did
not awake after them. Other doctors
have also agreed as to the genuineness
of the phenomenon, and the sleeping
girl of Thenelles remains a human mys
tery. Paris Letter to London Tele
graph. Why Windmills Burned Down.
Of the production of fire by the fric
tion of wood against wood, windmills
of the old construction gave, on a large
scale, some disastrous examples. When
the force of the wind increased, the
miller was obliged to bring each of the
sails in succession to the ground in or
der to unclothe it, but when sudden
squalls came on this was impracticable,
and the mill, in extreme cases, ran
away that is, could not be stopped.
Everything was now done to increase
the grip of the wooden brake round the
great wheel on the driving shaft, and
water was poured copiously over them,
but in spite of all this names would
sometimes burst out from the intense
friction and the mill be probably
burned down as the result. Th(J beau
tiful machinery bf the modern wind
mill, by which the miller controls the
action of the sails from the interior of
the building, has reduced this danger to
a minimum. Notes -and Queries.
BUFFALO BILL SAVED HIS LIFE.
Congressman Hall Tells of an Adventure
In the Black Hills. . -
"Buffalo Bill Cody will always live
warmly in my heart. I'm by no means
sure but I owe him my life." It was Rep
resentative Hall of Missouri who thus pro
nounced for the showman scout, and
Washington Post man was among his au
ditors. Continuing in explanation of that
earnest regard in which he held the long
haired Cody, Hall went on to say: "I was
a very young man when, I first met Cody
at the little jimcrow camp in the Black
Hills country. I had gone there to seek
my fortune, and, I might add, came away
a year or so later without finding it.
- "It was in there I met Buffalo Bill and
another of the same long haired brood,
somewhat celebrated at that time Cali
fornia Joe. I was a tenderfoot of the ten-
derest kind, and these two knights of the
border, whose experiences were as long and
thick as their hair, seemed willing in a
casual but protecting way to be friendly.
When I came into camp, I was given a
room at , the ramshackle construction
which passed for a hotel, the same room
being but that morning vacated by a very
bad man who left for Deadwood, I had
called it mine about a week when the bad
man from Deadwood came back, cornered
the landlord and demanded 'his room.'
The landlord said he would see me. I saw
no good reason for giving way to the gen
tleman from Deadwood, and as to give up
the room meant to sleep in the sage brush
I declined the proposition.
"The landlord took me one "side after
supper that night and with a pale face
whispered: 'I want you to look out for
yourself." This yore sharp from Deadwood
is prowling about camp some'ers talking
mighty hard about you and that room,
And, ' here the landlord threw a vast deal
of mystery and dark significance into his
tones, he s been drinkin.'
"That evening, as was Usual with the
entire , male population, I went down to
the dance hall a fashion of hurdy gurdy
where everybody met everybody else and

swapped news and views and lead and
whatever they stood in most need of. I
was slUing in quiet talk with Buffalo Bill
and California Joe and was just telling
them of this collision in our destinies be
tween me and the Deadwood gentleman
when a ringing warwhoop rent the air
outside. The next moment the party in
question came into the . place. A glance
showed me that the landlord was justified
in saying that 'he was drinkin,'
" 'Where's that long, slim, blankety
blank Shorthorn who calls himself Hall?'
he yelled. ' 'I'm going to run him out o'
camp. I need his room, and I've took a
notion agin him, and he can't stay where
I am nohow.' Then he gave another yell
and favored us with the information that
he was a wolf.
"Cody, California Joe and I were sitting
a bit to one side, and as the Deadwood
man came surging down the center of the
situation he didn't see us. It came to
pass therefore that about the time he was
in the middle of the fourth yell I hit him
in the head with a sandstone matchsafe
which weighed about 80 pounds. The
Deadwood man went down like a tenpin,
and at that a dozen of his friends jumped
up and pulled their pistols. But quick as
they were Cody and California Joe were
quicker. They unlimbered their six shoot
ers in a flash, and Cody, who had two,
passed one to me with his left hand. Cody
then stepped in between me and the trou
ble. Cody seemed so bright and alert with
It all, and California Joe appeared so cool
ly ready at his elbow, that the other side
came to a dead halt. -
" 'See here,' I said, for it struck me as
a good time to be widely-magnanimous,
'if there are any differences, they're be
tween me and this Deadwood gentleman.
I don't want my friend shot up on my ac
count, and I suppose he feels the same
way about his. Now, I'm here and per
fectly ready to arrange our troubles in any
way he'll suggest.' i '
" 'All right,' he retorted, with an oath,
as he searched out a 0 inch bowie knife
from somewhere back of his neck, 'we'll
settle this with knives. Come right out
side, and I'll have you split into half ap
ples in about a minute.' -
"This was a startler.' I didn't like the
programme at all. That knife he drew
had a dull, evil glimmer which was very
fatiguing. But I saw no way out. Cody
passed me over a bowie knife.
" 'Don't take it that way,' said Cody
instructively, as I held it dagger fashion,
after the style of an actor on the stage.
'There I' changing it. 'Hold it just the
same as you would a sword. Now, don't
let this fellow rattle you at all. You've
got a knife two inches longer in the blade
than his, and with your height and length
of arm the thing's a push over.'
"I began to be much encouraged. A
good weapon puts heart in a man, and
Cody's knife balanced In my hand like a
hatchet. . I started for the door. 'Hold
up,' said Cody, detaining me. 'Let me
go first. It's a 10 to 1 shot that Deadwood
man is standing right beside the . door
ready to bushwhack you. ' .
"It was as Cody apprehended. The
Deadwood man stood close hugged against
the front of the dance hall, to the right of
the door, ready to give me the whole blade
of his knife as I stepped out. Cody and
he saw each other at the same moment,
just as the former stepped to the door. The
Deadwood man didn't want Cody, and at
sight of him jumped back a step, with an
oath like a rasp. . '
" 'You will, will youf said Cody, and
his tones were as full of a sudden ferocity
as a thundercloud of electricity. As he
spoke his pistol whirled on his finger like
a wheel of light and exploded. , .-
"The Deadwood man at the same mo
ment gave a howl, threw down his knife
and fled. 'Did you hit himF' I asked,
shocked at the ferocious suddenness of it
alL ' Cody laughed. . -'
" 'I didn't tryl' he replied. , r "
" ' Let ' s get a drink, ' said California Joe,
turning calmly to the bar."
ON TEE SPOT.
"Out damned spot," was what troubled
Mrs. Macbeth; but it was something in
tangible that she saw. In the active sea
son of spring and summer (ports there
are spots that are not visionary, but which
bring with them pain and grei t discom
fort. Bruises, black and blue, are the ac
companiments of every active sport. They
often cripple and are always a sore trouble.
Come from what source they may, the
thing to do on the spot is to use St. Jacobs
Oil freely and promptly. There is nothing
surer and it wipes out the pain as we
would wipe off a slate. In like manner
sudden attacks of rheumatism, to which
people are liable at this season, can be
promptly cured by applying St. Jacobs Oil
to the pain spot.
As the Amercian people come to use
their brains more and their muscle less,
