THE HVGHEST AWARD.
Royal Baking- Powder In Strength and
Value 80 Per Gent Above Iti Nearest
Competitor
The Boyal Baking Powder has the en
viable record of having received the high
est award ior articles of its class great
est strength, purest ingredients, most
perfectly combined wherever exhibited
in competition with others. In the ex
hibitions of former years, at the Centen
nial, at Paris, Vienna and at the various
State and Industrial Fairs, where it has
been exhibited, judges have invariably
awarded the Royal Baking Powder the
highest honors.
At the recent World's Fair the exami
nation for the baking powder awards
were made by the experts of the chemi
cal division of the Agricultural Depart
ment of .Washington. The official re
port of the tests of the baking powders
which were made by this department for
the specific purpose of ascertaining which
was the beat, and which has been made
public, shows the leavening strength of
the Royal to be 160 cubic inches or car
bonic gas per ounce of powder. Of the
cream of tartar baking powders exhib
ited at the fair the next highest in
strength thus tested contained but 133
cubic inches of leavening gas. The other
powders gave an average of 111. The
Boyal, therefore, was found of 20 per
cent greater leavening strength than its
nearest - competitor, and 44 per cent
above the average of all the other tests.
Its superiority in other respects, how
ever, in the quality of the food it makes
as to fineness, delicacy and wholesome
ness could not be measured by figures.
It is these high qualities, known and
appreciated by the women of the coun
try for so many years, that have caused
the sales of the Boyal Baking Powder, as
shown by statistics,, to exceed the sales
of all other baking powders combined.

HOW STOUT GOT STOUT
THE REMARKABLE EXPERIENCE
OF A RHEUMATIC SUFFERER.
All But Paralyzed Lost Hia Flesh and
- Expected to Die How He Got Well
'and Strong.: .. ;
From the Mt Sterling (111.) Republican. .
few men are held in higher esteem hy
their fellow townspeople than James W.
Stout of Biply, 111., and it la due no
doubt partly to this popularity that the
record of the case has created such wide
spread interest. While his experience
is not without an equal, yet it has been
sufficiently remarkable to demand the
attention of thousands of people in Illi
nois, among whom are numbered some
of the most eminent physicians.
In January, 1893, Mr. Stout was
stricken with what was then believed to
be sciatic rheumatism, and in a short
time was barely able to hobble around
on crutches, and it seemed to his friends
that his days were numbered. To-day
he is a strong, hearty-looking man of
160 pounds. '
How this wonderful ' change was
brought about is most interesting as
told to a representative of the Republi
can by Mr. Stout himself:
" I was afflicted with sciatic rheuma
tism and lumbago in January. 1893.
-The sciatic nerve on the right side be
came anected in the nip, running down
to the ankle and across the small of the
back to the left side, and soon my whole
system became afflicted, causing me the
most excruciating pain. In a very short
time I became totally unable to attend
to any business whatever, and the dis
ease rapidly growing worse, I had to take
to my bed, where I lay suffering almost
continuously for months the most agon
izing torture, scarcely being able to move
or be moved. At one time I lay for six
weeks flat on my back, , the slightest
movement causing me such pain as al
most to throw me into convulsions. I
cannot begin to express to you the in
tense pain I suffered. I was drawn by
the severeness of the malady over to the
left side ; lost my appetite ; bad no de
sire for food, and what little I did eat I
could not digest, the digestive organs
failing to perform their duty, adding
greatly to my already precarious condi
tion. , For weeks at a time I was unable
to eat or sleep, suffering all the time
most intensely and at times fearing I
would lose my reason, and would have
welcomed death to relieve me of my suf
ferings. ' v
" I consulted with local physicians and
some of the most eminent specialists of
the larger cities throughout the country,
some treating me for one thing and some
for another, but without effect, and I re
ceived no relief whatever. One physi
cian told me I had double curvature of
the spine and would eventually become
paralyzed. I spent hundreds of dollars
in the short time I was afflicted without
receiving the least benefit. . My friends
all thought that there was no hope for
me whatever, and said that I must die;
and I myself had almost'given up in de
spair, when in September, 1893, about
eight months after I was first afflicted,
my attention was called' to Dr. Williams'
Pink Pills for Pale People. .. Without
much hope I at once sent to C. F. Rickey
& Co., druggists, Mt. Sterling, 111., and
procured some of the pills, and immedi
ately began taking them. Before long I
became aware of a great change for the
better in my almost hopeless condition.
My appetite came back, and my digestive
organs performed their usual functions
properly. I .took some more and grew
rapidly better could sit up in a chair,
and my body began to straighten out ;
continued the treatment, and in a short
time was able to be about op crutches.
My recovery from that time on was very
rapid and assured. My right leg, which
before I commenced this treatment was
numb and dead, now experienced a
pricking, tingling sensation. I was en
abled to throw away my crutches and
walk upright once more among my fel
lows, a better man physically than ever
before. , When first taken by the disease
I weighed 160 pounds ; was reduced to
115 ; I now weigh 166, more than I ever
weighed at any time in my life. Yes,
sir, I lay my recovery entirely to Pink
Pills."
Dr. Williams' Pink Pills for Pale Peo

eases as locomotor ataxia, partial paral

' An Interesting Use of Photography. ''
A French photographer lately invented
a process by which a bit of ordinary pa
per the leaf of a book, for examples-can
be made sensitive to the light without
affecting the jest of the page. Acting on
this hint, the French war minister has
begun to take the portraits of conscripts
and recruits on the paper which gives
their height, complexion, age, etc., and
the cheapness and swiftness of the oper
ation, which is already in use in the
French army, is something remarkable.
It costs only a cent to get two copies of
a portrait of -Jacques Bonhomme one
for his individual 'register and the other
for his muster roll and so rapid is the
process that in a few hours a whole reg
iment can be so photographed. The sol
diers file along one by one, and each sits
for three seconds in the photographic;
chair, and the . thing is done. Boston

A WONDERFUL CAT.
Ib Bode 1 Miles on an Axle Making 786
1 Revolutions a Minnte.
Cats have shown wonderful powers of
ooming unscathed out of perilous posi
tions if half the stories which have been
told are true, and the latest cat story,
which comes from England via the New
York World, proves no exception to the
rule. The cat in this case lived in London,
but for some reason it perched itself upon
an axle of one of the cars composing an
express train on the Midland railway. The
train is a fast one and did not stop until
It reached Kettering, 73 miles from the
starting point. There the trainmen, mak
ing their rounds of inspection, found pussy
still perched upon the axle, somewhat diz
ey and much rumpled as to fur, but still
ready for more adventures.
The railroad men were puzzled to know
how the cat could have retained her hold
pon a piece of iron revolving hundreds of
times every minute, and the more they
disoussed it the greater was their astonish-
DIAOBAM SHOWING CENTEB OF GRAVITY OF
THE CAT. -' .
ment. Finally a Manchester engineer de
termined to figure out just what that cat's
endurance amounted to. He consulted the
time table to find the speed of .the train
and got the dimensions of the car wheels
from the company's officials. Then he
started his figuring. '
Supposing the wheels to be 3 feet 6 inch
es in diameter and the distance from the
terminus at St. Pancras to Kettering to
be 79 miles, he found that the pussy cat
must have performed 84,560 revolutions
in 1 hour and 27 minutes, which is a job
that only a very big, powerful and excep
tionally determined ten pound cat could
hope to tackle with any hope of success.
Then the englner had recourse to a dia
gram of the cat slung to the axle to aid
him In his further calculations. Pussy'i
center of gravity, he figured, would fall
about 12 Inches from' the center of the
axle, and at a speed of 60 miles an hour it
would reel off the mere-bagatelle of 480
revolutions a minute, the velooity of 'her
center of gravity meanwhile being 60 feet
per second.. He then found that there had
been something like 700 pounds weight
thrown upon the leading claws when trav
eling at full speed.
The engineer then made a personal ex
amination of the cat, taking exact meas
urements of her toe nails, and as a result
of -more calculations of a very fine nature
he found that pussy's resistance to centrif
ugal force was equal to 17 tons perpquare
inch of claw section. There were other
factors to be considered in a really exact
solution of the matter, such as wind re:
sistance when passing through the top
centers. But the engineer thought he had
gone about far enough. . "..'
EVER CATCH A PORCUPINE?
Just Cut His Tall Off Short When Ton
' . . See One. ' ' -
One morning recently Jack Lansdow of
Dyer county, Tenn., picked up a hatchet
and started out to the wood pile to cut
some kindling. As he stepped from the
kitchen door he was surprised to see a
large hemlock porcupine climbing a tree
about ten feet from the door. Lansdow
had often heard that if a porcupine's tail
is Out off while in the act of climbing
it will stop and refuse to climb higher or
descend. As the prickly little animal was
only about four feet from the ground, Jack
had no difficulty in springing forward and
with a quick blow of the hatchet severing
the tail of the poroupine in twain. Sure
enough, the animal stopped its ascent and
has remained in the same position since.
; A porcupine Is rarely ever seen in that
part of the country and is therefore quite

fcors soon heard of the porcupine and be

no reason why he should not make some
money out of the thing, so he placed a 12
foot board peep tight fence around it and
began Charging 10 cents admission. He
made several dollars a day with his prize
and one Sunday collected $4.10.
The animal has beoomeNperfectly used
to the crowd and readily eats and drinks
from, its master's hands. - Lansdow says
he would cut off a section of the tree with
the poroupine on It and carry the animal
around and exhibit it but for the fact that
it is on a valuable shade tree, and that the
porcupine, may not be able, to hold on
much longer. At present, though, accord
ing to a veracious correspondent of the
Cincinnati Enquirer, it looks as chipper
as it did before it lost its caudal append

FAITH CUBISTS.
" These very confident people are strange

up, as when the chronic pains of many
years' endurance attack the heart, like
Rheumatism very often does, then they

held to by many thousands is simple and
certain. It is faith founded on experience

A Funeral and a Reception. . ..
; "I went this afternoon," said a woman re
cently, "to a reception and a funeral, and
really, looking back at the two events, they
have a curious similarity. The funeral was
that of a dear old lady, who had lived her
allotted time a beautiful life, full of good
works and loving kindnesses. The end came
naturally, and she went to meet her reward.
Her family, who loved her fondly, seem to
regard her going as a happiness for her and
only a tender sorrow for themselves to miss
herpresence. (
. "Today when I went to the house the
members of the family were standing, un
bonneted and without the usual garments of
mourning, in the parlor, near the entrance
door. They greeted quietly the friends who
tame and spoke witliout'tears of her who
lay dead in the room beyond. , Such as
wished walked on and looked for the last
time on the placid face in its halo of flow
ers. Presently a silence fell, a clergyman
stood up, and there were a few hopeful and
comforting remarks, a prayer and an al
most triumphant song. Then I pressed my
friends' hands again, said goodby cheerful
ly , and in a strangely exalted frame of mind
went out from the house of death. , In 20
minutes I was at the reception, and, as I
said, there was a similarity between the two
affairs indeed the funeral seemed to me to
have in it more of a living touch than the
reception." Her Point of View in New
