They are . simply square boxes,

B,nd two more, one on each side of
the two "boots," at the sides. Each
vehicle had a roof resting on light
columns and curtains to draw or to

This agrees well with the received
account of the incident, according to
one version of which Henry rode in
an open carriage, and according to
another that as soon as the fatal
blow was delivered by the assassin
the king's attendants, who rode with

Edward Donnelly Saves a life Almost
at the Cost of His Own After Years
of Suffering He Is Restored to Health
His Story as Told to a Reporter of
the Auburn Bulletin. , .
Auburn (N. Y.) Bulletin.
It is on record that upon a chilly April
day, a few years ago, an eight-year-old
boy fell into the East river at the foot of
East Eighth street, New York, and when
all enorts to rescue mm Had laiiea,
Edward Donnelly, at risk of his own
life, plunged into the water and, when
himself nearly exhausted, saved the boy
from drowning. It was a humane and
self-sacrificing deed, and received de
served commendation in all the, news
papers. .
There is a sequel to this accident, how
ever, which thus far has not been pub
lished. It is to the effect that Donnelly
was paralyzed as a result of the cold
plunge and came near dying. Auburn
people have known the family, his wife
Vw' A rvtnJn 2.n4-Wnn .1 1.,'-

ter Mrs. S. D. Corry of 21 Moravia street,
Donnelly himself describes the rescue
and the result :
"I was general foreman of the F. A,
Mulgrew Saw Mills, foot of Eighth street,
New York, on the East river. It was on
the 20th of April. 1889, that the boy fell
into the river and I rescued him from
drowning. At that time I was in the
water so long that I was taken with a
deathly chill, and soon became so sut
fened up and weak that I could neither
work nor walk. For some time I was
under treatment of Dr. George McDon
ald, who said I had locomotor ataxia,
He finally gave me up. and on the 1st of
June, 1892, my wife and I came up to
Auburn.
" When the disease first came upon
me the numbness began in my heels,
and soon the whole of both my feet be
came affected. There was a cold feeling
across the small of my back and down
wards, and a sense of soreness and a
tight pressure on the chest. The numb'
ness gradually extended up both legs
and into the lower part ot my body.
felt that death was creeping up to my
vitals. I was still taking the medicine
('it was iodide of potassium,' said his
wife), and was being rubbed and having
piasters put all over my body, but with
no benent.
" I sent to the Chas. H. Sagar Com
pany, the popular Auburn druggists and
chemists, at 109 ai.d 111 tienesee street,
and got three boxes of Dr. Williams'
Pink Pills for Pale People and began tak
ing them. ' In three weeks' time I was
so improved that from being helpless, I
was able to help myself and to get up
and go to work, and to walk every day
from No. 74 Walnut street, where I then
lived, to Osborne's New Twine factory,
Seymour and Cottage streets more than
a mile where I was then employed, but
all the while I was taking Pink Pills.
" Then Dr. Patchen of Wisconsin, an
uncle of my wife, who was here on a
visit, began to poo-hoo at me for taking
Pink Pills, and finally persuaded me to
stop taking them and let him treat me
When he returned to the West he left a
prescription with Dr. Hyatt of Auburn,
who also treated me. But their treat
ment did me no good, and after a while
the old trouble returned and 1 was get
ting badmgain. Then I began to take
Pink Pills; have taken them ever since:
am taking them now ; have taken in all
nearly twenty boxes at an entire cost of
less than $10 (my other treatment cost
me a pile oi money;, and again l am
well and able to work.
"If I was able, I would at my own
expense publish the virtues of Dr. Will
iams' Pink Pills to the whole world, and
especially in New York city, where I am
much better known than I am here."
Dr. Williams' Pink Pills for Pale Peo
ple without doubt mark the beginning
of a more healthful era. They were first
compounded by an eminent practitioner
and used as a prescription for many
years in general practice with almost in
credible success. Thejr are now given to
the public as an unfailing blood builder
and nerve restorer, curing all forms of
weakness arising from a watery condi
tion of the blood or shattered nerves,
two fruitful causes of almost every ill
that flesh is heir to. These pills are also
a specific for the troubles peculiar to fe
males, such as suppressions, all forms of
weakness, chronic constipation, bearing
down pains, etc., and in the case of men
will give speedy relief and effect a per
manent cure in all cases arising from
mental worry, overwork or excesses of
whatever nature. The pills are sold by
all dealers, or will be sent post-paid on
receipt of price (50 cents a box, or six
boxes for $2.60 they are never sold in
bulk or by the 100) by addressing Dr.

They explained why it was Cheaper to
Use False Syntax.
The telegraph operators were telling sto
ries again last night. The tall man, who
has held a key all over the country, had the
floor. -
"You see a good many jokes in the pa
pers," said he, "about the culture of Bos
ton and the habit people living there have
of using big words and correct grammar
and all that. Most of you think that these
jokes have no foundation in fact. Now, I
know better. I was receiving clerk in the
Western Union office there a good many
years ago, and some of the messages hand
td In to me were corkers. .
"One summer I had the cable window.
One day two women dressed in black and
greatly agitated came in and inquired the
rate per word to London. . I told them it
was 28 cents. They consulted for a minute,
and then one of them asked for a blank. I
told them where the blanks were, and one
of them wrote a message. The other took
It and read it two or three times.
"Then she came over to the window and
asked again how much it was a word to
London. 'Twenty-eight cents,' I told her.
She looked at the message dubiously. The
other woman came up to her and said,
'Don't you like it? ' ,
" 'No,' she said, 'I don't like it. That
form is improper. You say that Charles
suicided this morning, when it should be
said that Charles committed suicide this
morning.' - . . -
" 'But,' said the other, 'if we put it in that
way we will save 88 cents.' .
"The woman who objected turned this
proposition over in her mind for a long
time. Finally she said, "I don't think
that such syntax is excusable.'
"The other took the blank and read the
message a few dozen times. 'We're poor,'
she said decisively, after studying it in all
its phases, 'and we can't save 28 cents any
easier.'.
"This partially convinced the woman
who objected. 'But what will our friends
think f she asked dubiously.
" 'I suppose they will notice it, but we
can't help that.' Then the two women re
tired to one corner of the room and had a
consultation. After talking earnestly for
10 minutes they wrote out another message.
So help me, this is the way I got it: 'Charles
suicided this morning. False syntax used
because it is cheaper.' ,
"And they paid me 28 cents a word for it.
All of which," continued the tall operator,
"illustrates one of the curious ways In
which a woman's mind works." Buffalo

Artificial Eyes.
A prominent manufacturer of arti
ficial eyes has unburdened himself
on what he considers a grievance.
He says that the public, and there
fore opticians, will no longer pay the
price for a good and well' made arti
cle, and that the market is being
flooded with "cheap foreign rub
bish." He alleges that the cheap eyes
crack after very few weeks' wear.
Pursuing the subject further, we are
informed that summer time is the
best season for the sale of artificial
eyes. People are at that time of the
year more particular as to their , ap
pearance and discover more readily
that the artificial eye is beginning to
lose its pristine perfection. Another
point is that there are many people
walking about whose outward ap
pearance suggests that they are in
full possession of both visual organs,
but have not even one. "I have
fitted," said the manufacturer,
"scores of people with two glass
eyes." The innocent deception is the
more successfully carried out owing
to the fact that the blind, from force
