Women and Actor.
Capoul, the French tenor, was the re
cipient of volumes of letters from lady
admirers both here and in Paris. On the
English stage, besides Mr. Irving, Mr.
Alexander, Mr. Hare and Mr. Bancroft
have been overwhelmed with a goodly
number. But I ain told by one who
knows that no actor living ever received
such a number of admiring epistles from
the fairer sex as the late John Clayton.
Among actresses Mrs. Bancroft has
perhaps been treated to the kindliest at
v. tentions. Mrs. John Wood, too, on the
first or last night of her play had always
her dressing room converted into a per
fect bower of flowers, and little gifts of
' jewelry literally poured in upon her.
There was ne bangle with the inscrip
, tion "Bless your art." Whether it was
Mrs. Woods' heart or art that was blessed
; remains a riddle to this day. London

A MOTHER.
ould I but have my baby back again
From the dim vastness of the great un
, known.
How would it ease my poor heart's silent pain
As I sit here in shadow and alonel
That heaven Is vast but makes me more
afraid, ,f
Who shall its hesitating footsteps guide?
Far cozier the nest my love had made.
Or so my heart feels, since my baby died.
Cold was the night it left my bosom warm
A night of wintry tempest harsh ana wlldl
Into hat world of darkness and of storm
Went forth alone my little toddling child.
I say alone, for who hears angels' feet
Pause at the threshold, though we dream
they come?
We hear not even death, the robber fleetl
We only know a void is in our home.
Mother! the very name is sorrow's own,
A synonym for heartache and for trial; .
'Tie she must tread the wine press all alone.
And when the tears would start must wear a
. smile.
What is the faith of priest, of Christian broth
er.
Of mitered bishop, though they kiss the rod?
Weak seems their worship when a trusting
mother
Yields up her pretty, smiling babe to God.
Arkansaw Traveler.
In a Hurry to Get There.
"I fear we will never get down town at
this ' slow gait, said a restless, pale
faced woman as she handed her fare to
a Third avenue surface conductor the
other night. . :
For a time the conductor was silent.
Then, turning, he whispered: .
"Do you see the glitter in her eyes?"
, "Yes, very plainly," ,
"In another hoar she will be
crazy."
As the car rolled down the Bowery
the woman looked through the window,
and the light fell full in her face. Her
eyes gleamed red and bright. Then the
conductor leaned in at the door and
said: '
"It isn't far now only a few blocks
more."
"You fool," she replied, "how dare
you drive so slowly! Had I known this
I should have come another way, and
half rising from her seat ' she. glared
through the door.
The conductor smiled sadly. "If ever
there was a hopeless case," he muttered,
"hers is one." .
"Have you known her long?" was
asked.
"Yes, a- year or more. She often comes
down on my late run. At first she was
quiet enough, but now she grows worse
and worse. ., .
"What caused her insanity?" ' " -"Insanity?"
and he turned as though
in astonishment. "Why, she is not in
sane. She hits the pipe. Wait till we
get to the Chinese district and you will
see. y

A Fattening Process.
Are you painfully thin? Do you eve
stand before four mirror and heave a
sigh of regret at your lack of roundness
of face and form which is so apparent?
If you do so you may find consolation at
hearing of a system of "putting on
flesh as employed with satisfactory re
sults by a number of people. Briefly
you go to bed and allow yourself to be
fed up. In twenty -four hours you have
eight glasses of milk with cream and
three huge meals.
That the fattening effect of this food
may not be allowed to be worked off
you are allowed to make no exertion.
Everything short of the process of mas
tication is done for you. You don't even
wash yourself. Besides being washed
you are massaged and rubbed with oil.
The last operation is an intelligible part
of the process of putting on fat, but not
quite so clear as the electricity.
This sort of thing is done continuous
ly for three months, and the woman
that has gone through the operation
that she may make a more presentable
figure gets up with a lighter heart and
a body perhaps two stone heavier. Some
women go through this process for the
cure of nervous complaints. Do you
think you would be willing to sub
mit to this treatment for the sake of ac
quiring a plumpness which you do not
now possess? Detroit Free Press.

JOHN BULL'S NEW SAVAGE WARDS OF
THE SOLOMON ISLANDS.
Since Tbeir Tillages Were Shelled, How
ever, Head Hunting Is Not So Popular
as It Onee Was Interesting Ori gin of the
Group's Name.
As if to prove beyond the shadow of a
doubt that the sun never sets on her im
mense empire, Great Britain recently estab
lished a protectorate over the Solomon is
lands, which are located near the ' equator
in the Pacific ocean, east of New Guinea
and northeast of Australia. The largest
islands are called San Cristoval, Reniiel,
New Georgia, Malayta, the Arsacides, Gua
dalcanal San Isabel, Choiseul and Bou
gainville. There are also scores of small
islands, and the entire group forms a dou
ble row about 700 miles long and contain
ing 10.000 square miles.
The natives are Malays and Papuan ne
groes and are probably about the worst
wards England ever took under her wing.
Although the word protectorate has a very
friendly sound, the Solomon islanders do
not take to it with any great show of en
thnsiasm, and a warship is constantly star
tioned among the islands to convince the
benighted head hunters and cannibals thpt,
although white men are very good eating
now and then, their true sphere of useful
hess lies in ruling over their dark skinned
brothers. ' ; . - i
In subduing the Solomon islanders and
putting a stop to their cannibalistic propen
sities, however, England has rendered the
world an undoubted service, for hitherto
the unfortunate mariner who was cast upon
the shores of these islands was invariably
killed and eaten.' - The natives formerly
used bone pointed spears and bows and ar-

rows in fighting, but many of them are now
armed with guns. They have large war
canoes with tall prows and sterns, which
rise in the form of wooden pillars and are
adorned with most picturesque and elab
orate carvings.
The men and women wear no clothing
but a loin band, and at Rubiana, foe of
their principal towns, they worship a gro
tesque idol formed of an upright block of
wood which bears the likeness of a human
face and has inlaid rings for eyes and ears.
In war they are inveterate head hunters,
and their victims are devoured. It is said
that at the time Alverdo de Mendana dis
covered the islands in 1567 the natives
looked upon cannibalism as such a matter
of course that the chief of San Isabel sent
the Spanish navigator part of the body of a
boy, just as he would have offered half of a
bullock, and was much offended when Men
dana ordered the present buried.
Until very recently the crews of traders
and whalers did not dare land on the is
lands, owing to the treachery and murder
ous propensities of the natives, and allowed
but few canoes to come alongside the. ship
at one time. The chiefs were permitted to
come on board as much for the sake of se
curing them as hostages in the event of
hostilities as to do them honor so long as
they behaved themselves. The bulwarks
were also protected to a considerable
height by hammock nettings in order to
preclude a sudden boarding of the vessel
by the islanders, but in spite of these pre
cautions a number of ships have fallen into
the hands of the cannibals, and their crews
were murdered and devoured. Although a
few missionaries are now hard at work
among the islanders, there are still many
places where a small party of white men
would lose their heads in short order if the
natives were convinced that their fate
would remain a mystery. .
Since the British- gunboat Rapid has
shelled a number of native villages, bow-
ever, and claimed a life for a life every time
a white man was murdered, the islanders
have confined themselves to amusements
that were less provocative of grape and
canister and an aftermath of shot and shell.
Not long ago a trader named Duval was
murdered m Mott bay, among the southern
islands of the group. Shortly after the
commission of .the crime the Rapid steam
ed into the bay, cleared for action and then
sent word to the chief of the island where
the murder occurred that if the slayer of
Mr. Duval were not delivered aboard' the
ship in two hours the village would be
plowed with shells and sowed with a num
ber of choice varieties of grape and canis
ter. ;
.f The chief had either experienced a speci
men of this method of British cultivation
or bad beard all about how it was done,
lor he caught the murderer instanter, tum
bled into a war canoe with him and with
breathless hasta paddled him to the Rapid.
The accused man confessed his crime, and
the next morning he was taken ashore un
der guard of a strong force of marines and
sailors and shot in the presence of several
hundreds of his friends and fellow head
hunters. Such lessons as the Duval case
are rapidly convincing the islanders that
killing and eating a white man is such an
expensive luxury that it is quite out of
date.
There is something of a romance connect
ed with the naming of the islands. Mendana
gave them the name they now bear "to the
end that the Spaniards, supposing them to
be those isles whence Solomon fetched gold
to adorn the temple of Jerusalem, might be
more desirous to go and inhabit thesAme."
Mendana's colonization scheme failed, how
ever, for when he set out to find them again
he was unable to do so, and they were lost
sight of until Carteret rediscovered them
exact ly a century later and formed a French
settlement on San Christoval, which was
finally' abandoned on account of the un
tamable ferocity of the natives.
The islands are of volcanic origin, and
they possess one active crater. The gold
that Mendana endeavored to use as a bait
to lure colonists to the group was all in his
mind, and naturallv none of it has ever
been found on the islands. The land is gen
erally fertile, yielding breadfruit, cocoa
nuts, yams and sago in abundance, and may
also be cultivated for cotton and sugar.
