Morgan has bought the inter est of C. W. Finn, deceased, in the southwest quarter of section 34, town ship l! north of range 10 east, paying $500 therefor. The February term of the district court begun at The Dalles Monday. There are some sixty cases on (lie dock et, among them one mtu'der trial from the Cascade Locks. Biggs of Wasco, Sherman county, was appointed receiver of pub lic money for The Dalles land olHce, Tuesday. -This is the position at pres ent held by Co). T. S. Lang. The Ladies aid Society of the Metho dist church, will serve "(supper at the Langille house on the evening of Feb. Sard. .Supper 25 cents. Oysters served sep-irate 15 cents. Everybody come. Waucoma Lodge K. of P. will' cele brate the 30th anniversary of the order Monday evening next, at their hall. There will be brief literary and musical exercises, followed by a supper. All members of the order invited. Professor Leroy was a candidate for consul at Victoria, but this could not le given him. The resignation of the postmaster at. La Grande has been called for and obtained, and it is prob able Mr. Leroy will get the place. F. W. L. Skibbe of The Dalles stabbed a man named Wilson, one day last week, with n pocket knife. It was thought for a few days the victim of his assault would die, but fortunately for all parties, he is now recovering.and out of danger. Company D has 45 members, and so will maintain its organization for an other year, at least. The armory com pany are putting in lockers and other con veniences for the boys, and when the repairs are completed the armory will be in good shape. ' The annual school elections will be held March 5th for the election of di rectors and transaction of the general business of the districts. In this dis trict Director Pratber goes out. Ho lias proven an efficient officer and should be re-elected. . The chairman and secretary of the republican state central committee lias issued a call for the state convention to meet-in Portland Wednesday, April 11th, for the purpose of nominating state and district officers, and also for t he con vontion of the second congress ional district to meet in that city on th sume date. . A Lively Eiiitawfiy. Ed Rand and Win. Gibson came over from the Button ranch Tuesday, driv ing Button's' two thoroughbred colts hitched to a spring wagon. In front o; the drug store the black colt kicked and got a leg oyer the. wagon tomrue. They became frightened and started to run. Gibson, who was driving, pulled them up, but the lines slipped through his lingers and' Ed reached over nnd grabbed them. In doing so he fell out, taking the lines with him, but in try ing to protect himself lost his hold on them. Gibson, realizing that he could do nothing, jumped, and the colts lit out for home. In front of Billings' the wagon uncoupled, the hind wheels go ing over the bluff and dowu onto the side track while the bed remained on top of. the hill. The colts seemed to think they were needed at home, for they continued their race, keeping fair- lly in the track across the river bridge, up the grade and then through the open gate into the yard; them e through the bars und down around the brink of the river bluff, thence back through the bars, through the gate between the stables and into the stable yard. They made .the circle of this, going to the foot of thehill, but on the way back came to the conclusion they had enough, and just quit. In all their run they managed to make every turn and got through every gate without striking anything, and so escaped in jury. , . - Give Us the Negative! TheFrankton Lyceum had its first debate Friday evening last, which was well attended. After a spirited argu ment, in which M. P. Isenberg led the negative and W.J.Campbell the af firmative, the judges decided that the division of Wasco county on tne lines suegeHted for Cascade countv was bene ficial to all concerned. The subject for debate last night was: "Resolved, That there is more pleasure in pursuit than in possession." We do not know how the question was decided, but, with our weather eye on The Dalles land of flee, we affirm the negative to be cor rect. Tvo Lives Saved. , . Mrs. Plioebo .
