A friend, who evidently thought that
-a little closer fctudy of the divine taws
might increase our fund of information

us, Christmas, a handsome hihle. It is

profusely illustrated. Of course we ap
preciate the gift, hut as we already had
two bibles, either of which would prob
ably stand the wear and tear arising
from our use of them for the balance of
our days, we cannot help but feel that!
the gift was misdirected. It should

person unfamiliar with it.
Congress will meet again next week
And he country will be Mod for many
weary clays with dissertations on the
tariff. The Wilson bill, the Mills bill
ud Bill McKiuley will be compared,
praised, coudemned and benuuUlod.
At the eid of it all some modifications
of the proposed measure will le made
and the republico-dcmocratic measure
passed. The most important change
will probably be in giving ouie protec-
tiou to wool, coal and iron. In the
meanwhile both the old parties being
afraid, labor will be left on the free list,
all except the saffron-colored heathen.
L
A business that will not pay insii-j
ranee and advertising is not worth j
owning. A man too close listed to
spend a little of his profit in support
ing his home paper is too close to de
serve patronage, and if he cannot a (lord
it it is dangerous to deal with him, his
necessities tempting him to charge over
"the regulation profit. J
The trial of the smugglers in Fort-i
land resulted in a verdict, Saturday,
finding Dunbar, Mulkcy and Manning
guilty, and the balance, except Lotan
and Seid Back, not guilty. As to Lo
tan and Seid Back, the jury could not
agree.

Trout Lake VaUej.
This peaceful settlement on the
sunny slope at the base of Mt. Adams
las not heretofore been represented in
the Glacier, and is known to most
readers only a9 a popular summer re
sort. We have good farms, many cat
tle, half a dozen irrigating ditches, a
good school house, a number of tough
looking bachelor homesteaders, aback
number railroad survey and occasion
ally, a snow-storm. We &Uo expect to
have a sawmill in the spring. Haifa
dozen fellows are trapping this winter,
with only mild success. Lynx and
martens are the principal harvest.
Claus Pearson is in Portland this week.
Jlev. Wilson has preached in the school
house several times lately. Mr. Wil
son will take a claim in 19-0-11, and
settle with us in the spring. There is
no sickness in the valley. The rule at
all times is good health for everybody,
which is very fortunate, as it is twenty
miles to the nearest doctor. At the
time of this writing there has not been
snow enough to close the road, but the
mud is pretty bad below the falls.
Messrs. 8ev. Benz and Wm. Stadle
man with their families celebrated
Christmas with the family of Post
master Pearson. Noah Etter will do
duty as a juryman in Goldendale next
week. The HundayNsefaool kids had a
howling good time at the Christmas
tree. It was the ' first effort .in that
line in the settlement and might very
properly have been indorsed by more
of the parents; but though only a niod--st
and inexpensive seedling it was, us
we have intimated, quite lum-tum p. c.
for the little folks. The gifts were dis
tributed by Santa Claus Pearson in a
marvelous costume, and there were
recitations and songs to your heart's
content. Thia may seem an unfavor
able time for lively politics, but in
Klickitat county we keep things mov
ing br placiugoureounty officers undir
the microscope. At this time, ivhen
very true democrat in the broad land
is driven by his native sense of justice
to declare for queen Lii., and the souls
of the pure republicans are consumed
with rage at the thought of a royal
nigger, it is most darned astonishing
to ee the popu I ists denouncing in open
convention and repudiating their cho
sen county leaders for offenses which
ure generally regui'Ued as commonplace
virtues. If this is good politics it is so '
lery good that it may be out of sight

It is quite probable the indictments j
against Lotan and Seid Back will be
allowed to grow musty in the pigeon
holes of the U. S. district attorney's of
fice, as it will be next to impossible to
convict them. The evidence agabist
Lotan is weak, and Seid Back being a
Chinese merchant, is of course incapa
ble of guile.
