'Sfocd iivcr Slacier. HOOD lUVKlt, OU., NOV. 1!, lS'.fJ THAT MCCOY IinVif. Mr. G. V. McCoy, cuino up from Portland Thursday, for the purjMiixs of looking further Into hi pmixwd ditch. He inquired wiuvrniiiir Uu rrobubd ity of tlu iixhsh! ilileli on tho west lde being made, and cxpvi-scd him self frankly, to tho ellWt that ho did not want any of the water unless lie could monopolize it. 'this ho can ncv r do for fcovci'ul rcuf-ous. The lMtcu Civek Co,, have rights on the waters of Ioad and (Jroen point crooks; which if ncootujy could nnulo to supply jiearly ull tho west side, and when wator is needed, the melting snows and ice of Mt. Hood send down a ltood that would till a canal hi;: enough to run a steamboat on. The fact U, there h 1 water enough in Hood river to irrigate ton times tho land available, and hence .monopoly of tho water cannot U Lad. Ve would like to tee Mr. Mo 'Coy build his ditch, as ho pivposi-s well up on tho mountains but if ho does ho will find that ether ditches w ill bo built, and the water w ill have to be sold lor what it will bring. CHOLERA XEXT YEAR. While the cholera scr.ro in this country has entirely subsided, and is almost forgot ton, the disease still lin gers in Hamburg, the reports showing last, Oct., 7;h -1 cases and ti deaths. In Uudu Pestli, Hungary, 57 eases wore reported Oct. 7th witli -1 deaths. Isolated cases an; reported from around every country in Kurojie, showing that the seeds of the disease uiv wide spread, and presaging a lieree epideinie in !!!:. America has o fur escaped, but we j t cart hardiy 1ki-c to avoid the disesse next year, should it come, Chicago with its World's fair w ill be the great est eur'erer financially, and we believe will also have the largest death rate. The Chicago river is a vast open sewer, and the water supply of the city, even with the new system is bound to be jlluted by it. In view of this the wise man will think twice before mak ing a trip across the continent, and will be prepared to start for home at a min utes notice. About the most amusing back-action caused by tbe result of the election is to see the Oregonian which has had 110 langutge strong enough to con demn what it calls the "calamity liowleru," suddenly strike tin scent and give louder tongue than any of the pack it has so lately abused. Accord ing to it, our factories will close down, our furnaces grow cold, grass grow on the railroads, and barnacles on our merchant marine. Everything is to be reversed and the waters of the Col umbia flow up hill. We do not believe the majority of the American people re going to send the government and themselves with it packing to perdi tion; nor that nature is going to be con vulsed because of the sudden change ot political sentiment. The country will prosper without a tariff, as it has pros pered with it, as it will prosper in tpite of it, if it is continued. Thi3 country iias too many resources, and this peo ple too much energy and elasticity, by which they fit themselves to the ex isting order of things, to be bound down, or kept back by any financial legislation. The democrats are pass engers on the good ship of state, as well as the republicans, and there is but little danger that they will scuttle it. Let our big contemporary remem ber that Weaver has 23 elkctoral votes, and while it groans under what it i3 disposed to consider a calamity, let it felicitate itself on the fact that neither "the silver cord is loosed, nor tile (olden bowl broken." We believe the water question for this section is now thoroughly settled and that the ditches will be pushed to completion as rapidly as men and money can do it. The west side ditch will make a good showing by spring, and early summer will sea it weil to wards completion. We believe that in one year from this date every piece of land tributary to tbe ditch will readily sell for double what the same would realize now; and we feel confi dent that there are whole lots of our neighbors who will mourn tho oppor Tunny to purchase lands at present prices, that they have let pass. Hood Jtiver real estate as an investment beats ten per cent twice oyer. Every person in the ralley is inter ested in having a good local paper, and to accomplish this, should do all iu their power to assist it.JIt caa not exist without patronage sufficient to pay for printing it, and can neither be enlarged uor improved unless the means are furnished to pay for the expense. Be tides patronage, its readers should as sist in furnishing the local news. The man with an item is our friend and as such always welcome. Drop in and tell us what you know, and then see that your neighbor subscribes for the paper.
