Hay evening in c mpaiiy with two;
.deputies, Wilson was taken a
lwn
oibtaneo from rorthnid and put aboard
the West Eide traiu at 4:40 in tke evoii
ing. Going up the last slue to Me
Minville, .a hack was hired the
party started for Sa'tru, Wilson jvas
jestrained of his lileity'Ln no way,
.jiid jumpiug from the carriage made
Ilia escape in the tUirkuct. The
alarm was at oi.ee given, and the next
morning searching parties were svnt
out from all neighboring towns, but up
to this writing, Tuesday, he Jiiis not
been seen. A burglarized house and
stoleu gun and revolver, Monday, was
jirohably Wilaons work, if so, he is now
veil armed, and will l a hard man to
take alive. If he oneo gets into the
4 'facades, he an defy .arrest. The
!ieep cump would furnish hini ammu
mtiou and some food, and hi gun and
fishing tackle iwhieh thesuecp camps
would alao furnish) wjnild provide the
balance. He may be taken but it
would be no matter of surprise if he
wa never beard from gain. Tva fact
that it has been suggested as probable
that he would kill hinwelf, will tend
to discourage those now seeking him
and if he is not caught shortly this sup
position of suicide will grow into belief
and thus he will be pasistcd iu escap
ing. In view of all the circumstances,
jt is a pity that the mob did not get
him, as the Multnomah bhcrilT, was
unable to keep him in custody.
The People's party National eonven
tion, in session at Omaha, nominated
General Jarua B. Weaver, of Iowa, for
president, andj. O.'Fiold, of Virginia
for vice provident, Jt was intended
to make the nominations on July 4th,
.but loug winded speeches used up the
time, nd Weaver's nomination was
not made uutil 12:4-5 Tuesday morning.
General Weaver, made the race for the
presidency once before, being the nom
inee of the Greenbatkpnrty in JSSO. He
received iu that election 307,740 votes.
The senate much to the surprise of
everybody baa passed the free silver
hill, and the matter new in the
house. It is bard to fay what action
the house will take in view of the coin
ing election, but it Is quite probable
that the bill wiil be passed, and equally
probable that the president will veto it.
The passage of the bill by congress
would have a tendency to spike some
t the guns of the People's party, hence
ihe probability of its passage.
I he river and haibor bill bas pa,ssed
Jwth houses, and there is no appropri
ation for the boat railway at The DalJes
Celilo rapids. The bill however ap
propriates 435,000 for the Cascade JL.ocks
and provides that the work be done
jby contract. If the money is made
available in time to take advantage of
the low water this season, there will
be a great change in the appearance of
the canal before snow Mies.
Following on the heels of the dread
fill famine, the cholorea is sweeping
over Russia. Never was an unfortu
nate people in better condition to be
swept away by an epidemic, With lit
tle vitality left the poor starved crea
tures wiil be carried away by the
thousand. Jt is feared that the epi
demic, will sweep over all Europe, and
may possibly lind lodgement in this
touutiy.
Chairman Campbell, of the republi
can national committee has resigned,
owing to bis inability to get released
from his contracts as an attorney. Ilis
. successor will be elected by tjie esecu.

ATEMPT TO KIKE THE BOATf.
Wuciiit was fouud that little im-1
prcssion was nia-'.e with the cannon on i
ihe boats, an ellbrt was made lo tire I
the barues. A hose was procured and
oil sprayed on the docks and sides of
I the lurices. Hanoi after barrel of oil
. was emptied into the river above their
mooring place, Hie object Doing to lei
it lloai, against tlie boats, and then ig
nite it. 'i lie terrible deed was attempt
ed several times, but lite boats did not
burn, and tiie moo became infuriated
and hur.ed dynamite bombs at the
vessel with gloat ellect. Tlie situation
of thede eelives was bUth as to appal
the stoutest hearts, 'three times did
tnev ruu un a lluir of truce, but as
many timds it was sirickeii dow n by
bullets filed by tlie sinkers. Then it
became evident that t.'ie uinmu.iiiioii
of the beseied detect jvts was either ex
hausted or they were too much worn
out to continue the light. Towajds
dusk efforts were again made to burn
the boats with their living freight, and
they doubtless would have succeeded
had jt not been for the interposition
of the leading oflk-crs of the amalgama
ted association who went to the scene
of the war. Through their eU'ons it
was agreed to allow the detectives to
surrender; but this was secured with
the greatest objection on the part of tlie
men, many of whom had lost friends
and aciiiiauitaiiCs's during the day; be
sides there were thousands of turoulent
characters attracted to ihe place who
Wanted to see the carnage go on. Jt
wss not until some of the strikers had
pointed guns at the -outsiders that a
hearing was obtained. At 5 o'clock
the I'inkertons hung out another white
fla. This time it was respected, and a
committee of the strikers went aboard
to prepare tern's of capitulation. They
guaranteed safe conduct lor the I'in
kertons, provided thoy left their arms
and ammunition behind and agreed to
leave the place under guard, the de
tectives had no alternative, and prom
ptly accepted the terms of the men,
some saying it was the first time they
had ever submitted to such a humilia
ting surrender. When an inspection of
the boat was made, it was found at
least seven of the l'inkerton men were
killed and 20 or ill) wounded, many so
badly that they will die. As they were
brought from the boat, they presented
a terrible appearance. Many were be
smeared with blood, while all showed
signs of exhaustion.
