r,Kccd driver Slacier. HOOD lllVKR, OH., JUNK, 2 CLKVXLAXD XOMIXATXD. TIm democrat ie national convention at Chicago nominated drover Cleve land for president on the first ballot at 3:S0 o'clock Thursday nmrninjr. Muofl time was consumed in the nominating speeches, and Just before the ballot whs taken a terrific rain storm set in, the big tent looked tike a show f hath tuid the delegate and audience were thor oughly drenched. Kven t hi could not dampen the ardor of the delegate, and a motion to adjourn wai voted down by almost unanimous vote. On roll nil t IcveUnd received 61L'J votes, Hill 11.1, Boies 105, Oornmu IWJ, Stevenson, 1!I, Carlisle IS. Cleveland's nomina tion has seemed Inevitable, and yet the opposition hsd almost strength enough to have defeated him. He had barely the two-thirds necessary to a choice, tind had this strength not develop), it is more than probable his mime would not have grnced the head of the ticket The Culifornian for July Is on ttir table and as usual is replete with good things. The article on Pompeii is of intense interest, especially as the illus trations are superb, and appealing to theeyecouvey & better Idea of these famous ruins than any description could possibly do. It is scarcely possi ble to realize in looking at the photo graphs of the casts of human bodies taken from subject found among the ashes that nature mild ho long have preserved the outlines and features, which are as distinct to-day as when the fatal eloud of ashes covered them from light and life. This superb mag azine should find a place by every flre xide. Address California Pub. Co., San Francisco. The Moro Observer, noting the fact that we expressed sympathy with "Wasco in her defeat on the county-scat question, says that wc will probably ijeed a little sympathy ourselves, "hence our tears." It may be possible that this will be the case, but if so we v hail not expect it from the Oberixr. We have always heard that a generous f would not kick an opponent when he was down, and the Obttervrr' sneer nt us because we expressed sympathy with Wasco in her defeat shows that tne editor of that paper is not only un generous but also unjust. The Portland city election, Monday, was an overwhelming defeat of the re publican straight ticket, but largely due to the independent republicans. The old ring was badly smashed and the material for a new one created. We believe that Joe Simon fixed tlv. slate for Cohen and Wygant, and that he is as potent a factor in Portland politics to-day as ever. Emmons Blaine, second son of the secretary, died very suddenly at Chit-ago last Saturday. The cause of his death was blood poisoning, resulting from inflammation of the bowels. Young Blaine had taken an active part In his father's candidacy and took his defeat very much to heart. Congressman Ellis is reported to be in a critical condition. It seems that from some cause his leg bad to be re set, and it has been asserted that blood poisoning has set in. TLis last is but a rumor, aud we sincerely hope a false one aud that the genial smile of our iiew congressman may soon again be visible to his friends. . M. Shutt has moved to Antelope, And will issue the first number of the Antelope Herald about July lat We understand the paper is principally started for the purpose of agitating the creation of a new county from portions of Wasco and Crook counties. As every point on the railroad is to celebrate the 4th, they will all be in the aame condition, that is, each will have a gathering of its own people only, ex cept Hood River, to which many will wine. General A. A. Stevens, of Illinois, is nominated for vice president on the Democratic ticket. The Suit Decided. ' The suit of Bernard Warren and oth ers against the Oregon Lumber com pany, was decided by Judgo Bradshaw, Wednesday, in favor of the plaintiffs. By the terms of the decision the Ore gon Lumber company are restrained from diverting the waters of Phelps' creek from the natural channel at any point below the dam at the head of said creek by means of said flume or feeders or in any manner whatever. And it was further ordered and ad Judged that plaintiff have and recover from defendant his costs in the action and that execution issue therefor. 4th of July Excursions Are ever popular and successful. Beatty, Pay I'p, We have considerable money owing to us on sulwrlp'Ion lu.vountsJi-OY'ertaff a period of from one to three years, and i we want it. IV are perfectly willing to wait until the paper has been sent one year beor asking for our nionev, but after that we feel that It belongs to us, arid we modestly but firmly nsk all those knowing themselves to bo In debted to us for more than one year to j ionic ip and settle. This U the last call of this kind, aud we respectfully suggest that we have thrown grass and clods uutil we nrv tired, and stones will be the next prescription If the boy din's not "come down." If you want the paper, pay for It; If you don't want It, pay what you owe and stop it. This course will not make us mad, as news paier Is like any other commodity, you can buy It or let it alone, but If you do buy it vou are expected to pay up. How We ilruw. Mr. K. I.. Smith has put up a sub- , stautial fence around the forty acres on Indian crock he bought of Samuel Clark. A great improvement lim been made on the Rankin place since Mr. Jones bought it. An addition to the house, new fencing aud new ground cleared, change the looks of the place so one would hardly recognize it. The llershey brothers have put up a very neat picket teuce along their whole line. 'ext comes the Odd Follows' cem etery, which a few mouths ago was all woods, but now is nicely feiiccd.cleurvd and lots staked oil'. When the wicket gateway and other Improvements are completed it will be an ornament to the street. J. T. Ncileigh, beside putting up a house, has cleared aud fenced part of his land and got in some wheat. The Baud place, under the care of Mr. Orser, is looking in better condi tion than it has for several years. Mr. Hcald's orchards are kept iu a state of model cultivation. The Husbauds place, which was bought last fall by Mr. Balcham, has had considerable new fencing and clearing dono and some nursery stock started. He expects to build a house in the spring. Mr. H. F. Davidson, who bought forty acres of Mrs. Monroe, has built himself u neat house and has his place under good cultivation A great number of ugly stumps aod brush, which ornamented t?) this part of the road last year, have recently been buri.ed out, much to the appear ance of the street. J. 11. McCoy's place always strikes us as a model little home. Both A. L. Disbrow aud Peter Hiu richs have considerable more laud un der cultivation thau they had last year. The next noticeable improvement is the new picket fenco in front of the Congregational church. It is both neat and substantial and an ornament to the place. All the farmers along here are doing well iu the way of clearing, and each year bees new ground broken and less stumps iu the old fields. The McKay place, since its purchase by Mr. Sipma, is undergoing such im provements that if they continue as he plans they shall, one would not recog nize it as the same place. A new house aud bam are both to be built this sum mer. These are some of the Improvements which would be noticed from the road by a person taking tike drive for the lirst time since last summer. We have not tried to enumerate all the improve ments, aud we have not mentioned the fine house built by Mr. Eliot, or the building and clearing going on along the line of the proposed new road which is to run in from Hershey's, around by Baker's uud out through Disbrow's. To see these one would have to do more than go round the bloek, which was tlie road we noted these improve ments on. The road is in fine condition ard the drive is becoming more beautiful and popular every year. . X. Tbe Horticultural Society. Programmes for the twenty-seventh quarterly meeting of the State Horti cultural society, to be held here on the 12th and 13th of July, can be found at this office and at the stores. We be lieve this is the first time the society has ever met in Eastern Oregon, and every effort should be made to show our appreciation of tbe honor conferred upon us. It will prove quite an adver tisement for this section and will re sult in much good. Everybody should unite in making the meeting a pleas ant one, and our fruit-growers should attend the meetings in a body. Some very interesting papers will be read and discussed, and no doubt many new ideas will be suggested. The next meeting of the society will be held in Portland, most likely, as it is the cus tom to hold the fall meeting at that El ace during tbe exposition, but New urg is going to make a fight for it. It is expected that from seventy-five to one hundred members of the society will attend tbe meeting here. Attention! I) Companr. There will be regular drill Wednes day evening, at 7 o'clock. All mem bers or tne company are ordered to meet at tbe armory Monday morning. July 4th, at 9 o'clock. By order of Captain Dukes. Cheap Rates for the 4th. The Union Pacific offer its patrons cheap 4th of July rates as usual this year. For dates of sale and limits of tickets, or any additioiiaLjuforiuatiou, apply to Wm.
