dlllNESE EXCL US ION.
' REPUBLIC. N CONVENTION'.
Congressman Geary's bill for the
absolute exclusion of Chinese from this
country passed the house during the
week by a liaudsame majority, but it
, will not pass the senate. Senator Dolph
. has tried, or is tryinar, to get an exten
' sion of the old law for ten years longer.
. People differ concerning the admission
' of Chinese to our country, just as they
differ on other subjects, but all must
agree upon one thing, and that is that
the present law is an expensive farce.
If they are to be admitted at ull, they
should be admitted without a mass of
'printed restrictions that exist. only in
the statutes and restrict only in the
minds of such men as Dolph. T lie race
question has been "argued and suli
mitted," and the verdict of the people
wherever the Chinese are known is that
they are a very undesirable class, with
whom the less we have to do the better.
The people of the coast want an exclu
. sion act that excludes, and the Chinese,
problem will never be settled until such
an act is in force. The Geary . law
provides that no Chinese shall be ad
mitted except representatives of the
Chinese government, or travelers under
certain restrictions, and that when any
Chinaman leaves this country he can
not return. The law is a good one and
should be that of the laud.

The election In Tacoma Tuesday was
hotly contested and resulted in the el

We are in receipt of No. 5, Vol. 1, of
the California Illustrated Magazine, ll
, Is the first copy we have seen, and we
are delighted with it. It Is profusely
illustrated, and as the name implies, is
largely filled with Pacific coast matter.
'.'Life in Honolulu" is a pretty sketch,
while (he "New Star of i)2," "The La
bor question on the Pacific coast," and
the "Dry Tortugas during the war,"
are excellent reading, and the article
on Nicaragua is peculiarly interesting.
The good things are too numerous for
individual mention. It will well re
jjay perusal. Printed by the California
Publishing Co., San Francisco; price $3
per year, 25 cents per copy.
The most important matter to come
before the next legislature is the assebs
ment laws. The question has been
dodged by two legislatures, but it can
not be by the third. It must be met
and settled. It is useless to enumerate
tne evils of the present system, for It is
much easier to say that it has one good
point its certainty and the rest are
nil bad, the mortgage tax law being the
crowning evil of the whole affair. We
believe the precinct assessment system
should be adopted, and that the work
would be done more quickly and cer
tainly much more thoroughly. Oregon
is at least thirty years behind the times
. in her assessment laws, and she should
catch up with the procession or fall out
. and quit. ;

with it entirely, nor does it agree with
us, but it has the merit of producing
something new, which is more than
can be said of either the republican or
democratic parties. They never change.

anti-monopoly plank has been the
basis of one; free trade and "home rule

We read in , the dispatches that the
United States senators are afraid that
if the Geary Chinese exclusion bill be
comes a law that the missionaries now
in China will be driven out and re
turned to America. We do not know
why the senators are so afraid of a few
, missionaries, but as far as we are con
cerned we had as soon have a few of
them as the Chinese. Besides, they
. are much more badly needed.especially
in and around the United States senate.
It was feared by many here for
awhile that our choice for legislator, T.
R. Coon, would fail of the nomination,
by reason of change of opinion by some
of the delegates, but we are pleased to
know, that this was not the case. Mr.
Coon is a clever gentleman, vel) quali
fied for the position, and' will poll his
full party strength. Hood River ap
preciates the honor of his selection and
will be satisfied perfectly when his cer
tificate of election is handed him.
Ex-Senator Watkins has accepted
the nomination, for judge of this' dis
trict. Judge Bradshaw will bo his op
ponent and it is our guess will have
1,000 votes to spare on election day.
Judge Bradshaw has made a record of
which he may well feel proud, and
which the voters of this district, re
gardless of politics, admire. Mr. Wat
kins leads a forlorn hope.
Yesterday was Arbor duy and was
celebrated with appropriate exercises
by the Hood River school. We print
the programme elsewhere, but the
ceremonies were too late in the day to
find their way into this issue.
, The democrats this year waited until
the republican chicken was hatched
before it began to think of Incubating.
It ia to lie hoped that it will not be able
to hatch any inferior ticket.
