VltcoroiK Work ut Ilio l.it Aero All I'livloil lim Hiinnora of All Sort A Long I'lortsaloii of llnjr Diti-kry. Ncgni irtlor Suppor. i A time honored eiisUmiannniijtlio hand . on a stiuar platu.itioti is the eelehration of ! the day when the la.st load of tano is j inuiled from the ih lds to the Miar lumse. 'l'lu re are few il:mieri who olijeet to this j festival, and there are iut many who j assist vron.iU iu its observance. An j neeonnt of one of these eeU'hratiotis will j lie an almost faithful picture of all, for there is little variety alnnit them. It is a ch ar, sunny, winter dav, and the h.m la work viu-orouslv at the last new jofcrtiio. C.iiu' knives iditier iu and mt j of the rustling ;reou tops, there is a swift (iieam oi tiriuiu steel hioii; tlie stalks, a quick stroke near the mound mid the pilers lift the clean stalks iu piles ready for the loader to toss in grout arnifiils to the men waiting iu the carls, ratio is heavy, and it requires a marvelous sleight of hand ami some muscular poNver to send biindle of eane tlyiug into the grasp of ntnither person. Minified with crackling f stalk and the rushing sou id of falling cane tops, comes the even nielodv of the negroes as they chant jnlnlee songs, i nere is only a little eane left, t he nieu hold hack, making a dosorute appearance of haste; but not cutting more thau they can help. Kach man tries to deceive his Iioighlior, hut the overseer is looking on nd the cane must he cut. Sw ish, crack the last stalk is almost reached, and who will have the glory of cuiting it? The men are eager and excited; the over seer hurries I hem up; one after another the stalks fall and, hurrah! the euvied man cuts the last, and waves it triumph nntly above his head. As the hist load is piled on h cart, cheer loud and long an uounce the beginning of the celebration. BANSKKS or ALL SOKTS. The planter ha supplied the negroes with banners of all sizes. The cane carts are decorated vitii these, and the three or four mules in every cart have a bright rosette, surmounted by a small United States Hag, placed alnive each long ear. Besides these there are from one to three great Hag supported in every wagon by a proud darkey, Malay or white man, s the cao may be. When the line is formed it has a very Imposing look. First comes the leader's cart, in which stands the man with the last stalk hel l upright, and one or two Hig Hags which the ladic9 of the planter's household are solicited each year to manufacture; and much envied is the man to whom they are pro Rented, for they are as attractive as yards of tri-colori-d llanuel, ribbons and giit de vices can make them. There are also ban ners made by the colored women mar vels in the way of streamers and gaudy patchwork. The long procession forms behind the last load of cane, surmounted by its gay decorations, and moves toward the sugar mill amid loud songs and deafening cheers fur the planter, manager and overseer. All the mill whistles are blowing, and the much respected plantation bells are left in the power of the people, to be rung until the anus of the ringer are worn out. The proecssioii is greeted at the sugar house with great rejoicing, speeches are indulged in, and the women and children stream from the quarters ami clamber into the carts. There is a great .shrieking of whistles, roaring of machinery, crashing of cane mingled with the sounds of soug and cheering, whO" toasts are drunk in every variety of Nvl.j.-ky but the U-st. Amid all this din minor noises are unheard. After leaving the sugar house the troop of darkeys files around the mansion of the planter, cheering the family, who are ex pected to make their appearance and be looked nt. Addresses are made to the planter, who, of course, has to return thanks; for if there is anything dear to the 60ul of the darkey if is speechmaking, and the father and brothers of the planter, if he has any, come in for their full share of negro oratory. TREATING THE CKOWO. Money is given to the leaders to treat the crowd, and the planter 1ms to use every excuse in his power to prevent him self being hoisted upon the shoulders of the joyous negroes. This ceremony lieing over, oranges re thrown into the carts, the leaders return to their wagons, and rattle around the grounds two or three times, with beating of drums, squeaking of fifes, cheering and other demonstra tions. Then off they go to get their sec ond Installment of whisky at "de sto'," where the plantation storekeepers receive their share of attention. The procession goes to as many plantations as possible, and in the dusk, as the fog comes rolling in from the river, sweeping across the empty fields and irHitig iu and out of the border of the woods, almost a mile away, one hears the sound of a beautiful ncro melody, We are waiting on de Lord, rising and falling sweet and clear on the night air. And then the carts come lum bering home holding a half intoxicated, wholly happy crowd. There is a grand supper waiting for them, and nobody thinks of the depredations committed be forehand upon other men's goods in the way of pigs and poultry. More liquor Is drunk, more speeches made, and the planter's entire fence is serenaded by the untiring crowd until a late hour. Before the rising bell rings the fog sweeps in eddying folds, white and pale golden, into the blue oak woods, and dis closes the quarters silent, for the very dogs are sleeping. Here and there gray smoke curls tip above the cabins; the bell' quavers its summons. There is a long, waking howl from the dogs, and sharp calls of negro women. Soon a large part or the previous day s proceedings will be enacted with unabated enfiiusiasm. Ruth Ramay in Xew Orleans Times' Democrat. The lOsklnio'n ICnilnrance.
