Ffii roii (Ji.acidh: 1 1 Ih a well-known fact that there Is a law In the State of Oregon strictly prohibiting the dump ing of slabs or sawdust Into any stream, yet this law Is being violated every i day by tin- mllliiien along Hood river. Slabs mid sawdust are dumped In in quantities sullliieiit to completely dam the stream, thus making it not only tlitllcult for fish to UHt'einI, but almost impossible to drive the river. Iltsid river must not lie allowed to lost! its reputation as a trout stream, but this it will surely do unless this sawdust Is kept out. If it is not dune, it should lie reported and the law used Ut comixd millmen to tlisjMise of their refuse in another way. Fihiikk. The Dance for I) Conipun). Hood Kiver was pleased with its militia company and determined to give them a fitting welcome home after their week of warfare with the heat ami dust of The Dalles encampment. Accordingly a bull and supjier was ar rungetl for Monday night, to which 1) company was invited, and about forty attended. The dance was tho most pleasant affair of the kind that ever occurred here. The crowd was large, the music excellent, and everybody vied with everytsHly else in enjoying themselves and assisting others to do so. At midnight supper was served at the Mt. Hood hotel by Mr. and Mrs. Herbert, ami it was a HUpjer the like of which HtHxl Kiver has never seen be fore. The tables were tastily arranged, each handsomely decorated with cut flowers by the committee of ladies, and were literally loaded with everything good to eat. Dancing was kept up un til 3 o'clock in the morning, and the regret that the night was not twice as long was general. (uotl (.'rlt, but Poor Judgment. Joe Fitzgerald wound upa chapter of bicycle accidents on the 4th that would make any man with more Judgment and less grit swear oil' bicycle riding. He was Hearing the wire in the three mile race w hen a dog ran in front of his wheel, giving him u terrible fall. He was picked up unconscious, but re ceived no injuries more serious than severe bruises. For the past two months Joe has leen on top of his tiicyclc half the time, the bicycle tak- i ing turn about with him. His first ex ploit was to miss a bridge and go head long into a ravine, tho damage requir ing a dollars' worth of court-plaster to repair it. Next, his machine ran away witn nun coming down the mountain from Cioldendulo and nearly killing him. Then he collided with another cyclist, Willie Grunow, breaking that gentleman's leg and receiving severe injuries himself, and on the 4th he "celebrated" in his own peculiar way. He is somewhat disfigured, but stays in the ring. 1J0HX. Near Hood Kiver, July 7th, to Mr. and Mrs. Charles Kerger, a son. DIED. At Lyle, Washington, July 5th, Mrs. Raich, aged 4tl years. Banfoin seems to be the coming grass fur Eastern Oregon, as every one who has tested it speaks highly in its praise. Deputy Sheriff Phirman, of The Dalles, always has a song for It, and the Ochoco Jievicw, in its last issue, says: Last fall R. Knee planted some san foin as an experiment, and reports that it is doing nicely. It was sown on sandy soil and, without irrigation, has grown over a foot high. This is an ex cellent range grass, and if it can be in troduced in this country will be a good substitute for the natural growth of bunch gross whero it has been killed. Does S. R. get there ? Well I should smile. S. R. Carpet at the furniture store 10 cent; below Portland prices.
