Tho sor fant; would haw lost thoir Ptripos lathor than assomhlo tlioir oompanios, Hiid the Colonel was niado to uiuier tand this. Tho plain truth sooir.s to Ik; that neither Col. lloiiirhton list tho Fourth of July committee were to Maine, each acting in good faith; and lite olame lies entirely with V nun Hiiy. When the disappointed public understand that the feelingcngeiHL'rod by the arrest of V company was so ironjf as to make the other companies ifraid to participate, and that in all probability some one would have been killed or hurt, it should feel thankful that the sergeants took the course they did. With the taking of w ine to the ground we have nothing to do. If it w as a violation of orders those taking it should be punished, but if it w as, it does not excuse the drunken carousal that followed its theft. The best thing our couteniporaries of The Dalles can do is to drop the subject for there is neither money honor nor glory in its discussion, ; and as Don Quixote re marked to Saucho Panza, at the full ing mills, " the more you stir it the worse it smells. " The eastern papers have again gone to commenting on the New York method of killing criminals. As usual, they disagree ns to the humanitvof the method, and some of them condemn it as being brutal and inhuman. We can no objection to the method. The object, thedeceu.se of the condemned, is accomplished instantaneously, and as painlessly as possible. It may be that an overcharge of electricity bums the features somew hat, but this is im material, as the subject is dead, and in most cases, at least, the slight burning, according to orthodox belief, is an ap propriate introduction to their future condition. It might be well to con tinue the application of the electricity until the body was cremated. At any rate, the method seems much better than the brutal hangings, with their occasional horrors. There is no sensa tional gushing at the final scene, and this alone should be a strong indorse ment, of the lightning plan. Hon. Hannibal Hamlin, died at his home in Bangor Maine, on the night of July 4th. He was vice president during Lincoln's first administration and is the last of those who were his advisors during those troublous times. E'YS XOTES. The organization of a State Aliiance was completed at Portland Wednesday, rseveiiteeii counties were represented. The platform is quite long and in most resiiects is an able document. The funeral of ex-Vice President Hannibal Hamlin took place at Ban gor, Maine, Wednesday, and was largely attended. Cincinnati had a million-dollar fire Wednesday. It started in a new eight-story building on Fourth street, which was occupied by A. E. Uark landt, dealer in furs. The stock was valued at $000,000 and building at300, 000, both being a total loss. " Besides the stock, many valuable furs, the property of private individuals, which were stored there for the summer, were destroyed. Four murderers were executed in the prison at King Sing, N. Y., Tuesday morning, by electricity. Death was in stantaneous in each case. Smiier's body was claimed by his wife, and it is said that when the box in w hich it was received was opened, the face presented a horrible sight, being burned and scarred as with u hot iron. The State has at last taken charge of affairs at Franklyn, Washington, and disarmed both the miners and Sulli van's dirty hirelings. Col. Haines, with a company of militia, is in charge of the company's property. Portland still leads in the base-ball contests, with Spofoine a close second. Bellevue, Idaho, was visited by a se vere hail storm Tuesday. The hail stones w ere over an inch in diameter and did great damage. W. H. Gladstone, eldest son of the Grand Old Man, died Hunday and was buried at Hawarden Wednesday. Twelve Indian renegades attacked a mining camp in Arizona Tuesday. A company of cavalry is in pursuit of them. The Miw-ouri river is at flood, and if any additional rise occurs great damage w ill lie done. .T. XV.
