The seplio tank has been used in Oregon for several peare both on piivate and puhho f ropertics. One was hiatal!! at tie Oregon Blind Schaol at Salem in 11KK1 and two are in ue at the :State Insane Asylum at Salem. Wherever used they are giving excellent satisfaction and will proiubly come into comno lire throughout the state within the next lew years. At the req4t of the Oregon .State Board of Health, Dr. K. A. Fierce of Suleoa wrote a treatise on septic tanks whioh gives s me val uable data upon this subject. In describing the process, he say: "In the septic Ur.k system the sewerage is pitsaol tdowly through the tank, o.it of contact with light and air, allowing time for the or aiiio matter to be broken , by vegetable organUni. All the re sults of the proof are harmlesi to animal lite and free f otn odors.' Cement, it is said, is the bent materia louse in the construction of the tank. The top may be covered with an arched roof of cement with a manhole, or with planking, and if the tank is of suflicient sizo it may have simp ly a shingle roof If the tank is large, say .'50 fe-t long, I weuld suggest that a balllo board be plac ed eight feet from the inlet, extending down crosswise to within two feet of (he bottom Eighteen feet from the inlet I would recomend placing a weir or solid partition of cement, extend- from the bottom of the tank to within 18 inches of the surface, and I would havA another bailU board like the Turner six f"et from the outlet. The pipe leading to the tank should bo at least four incheB in diameter, with an el bo and pipe extending 18 inches be low the surface of the suum. The outlet should be three or four inches in diameter, with an elbo extedding 18 inches below the surface. One or more intakes ana outlets should be used, according to the size of the tank. They bhould bo on an exact level. The pipe leading to the tiink should have just enough full to convey the He wage, avoiding m much as possible the disturbance of the tank.
