Rich started to corduroy the road, and would have Corduroyed the mad all through If Mr. Wilson had not put a fence In tne road. This made It neces sary to apply to lh County Court to have the road opened as a county road. The Court grained the road. County Surveyor Watts came with the view ers aud surveyed the Nicholi road to Wilson's fence, but there regardless of the petition, Watts refused to survey the Nicholi road; tried first the west! side of Wilsou'e place, then the east tide and declared It Impossible to get the grade. The next day Mr. Wilson closed the road. Mr. Rich and Detmst got Mr. Bonier, a surveyor from Port land, to survey the Nicholi road, show that the grade waa good. As this road wa built 27 years ago by Mr. Nicholi of Pottland, and has been opened and used extensively all this time, not only by all the residents of these hills, but also by all the Beaver Valley people and the Rainier people, this road, by a law enacted In 1892, making all roads ten years old county roads, thiejoad wm by rights a county road. The court accepted the Bonier survey, aud ordered the road opened, Mr. Wilson resisted, had Felix Debast arrested for opening the mad y order of the road supervisor, and Anally got an Injunc tion on the County Court and Debast on false pretenses. The aame day he erected a sham bare In the road, at the Cross place at the terminus of the rood. This place he bought a few days before from Mr. Cross, purposely to toptbe road. As this put lots of people In trouble (they had to pack all their pro visions and feed on their backs) we got another petition made; this time nearly afl the proptrty owners of Rlnier and vicinity signed the petition. Well the Court granted the road and Watts played nearly the same trick as the first time, that is he did not again sur vey the road as the petition called tor. but located it on the west side of Wil son' place. This put the road through a big bluff where the grading will cost no less than six hundred dollars, beside having to cut and grade a half mile of new mad. This of course will cause considerable delay, aud a lot of un necessary expenses for the county. It is well known here that this mad was made years before there were any set tlers ou the road except Debast. Had Mr. Wa;ts done his duty us he is sworn to do, this loud would never bve been shut. Now after Mr. Wilsou bus got the road where he wanted it, and offer, ed money to have it there, he sues the county for $4u0 damages, and he needs that road worse than any of us.' He is right In the middle aud has been using the road both, way all the time. I write you this because I think it necessary for the people of Columbia County to know what they can expect if they are net caretul at the uext elec tion. This county peas a good news paper and it can have it from this office, if the piesent list of sub scribers will only assist us in the matter a little. If you do not in tend to pay for the paper ask your postmaster to notify us. We are never offended because a man orders his paper stopped. It is the desire of Milton grange that the members of Pomona gran ge assist in making a display of the apple product of Columbia county. A mid winter horticultural exhibi tion will he held in Portland and it the proper effort is ut forth this county can surpass all others of the state. 'Let each member of the grange bring three plates of their bent apples. After being ex hibited at the Pomona they can be turned over to Mr. Asa Holaday or some one to be taken care of until the midwintei exhibition. At the horticultural exhibit of the Lewis & Clark fair Columbia coun ty puprifed all other sections of the ttate, In fact her apples graded 97 per cent. The beet award was given them. To day she has a reputation of producing the best apple in the world. Do not for get' this matter. Talk it over ac your next grange meeting and talk it over at home and with your neighbor?.
