A COMEDY OF JINQOI8M
One Illaetrattoa of the Utter Iom

A particular eianiple of ihm Cur b

another occurred lait year, when the
aeliur of the I.ritlib mall ateauicrMaJ
lacca by tbe ship of the Uuaslau vol
unteer Beet cauacd the relation! be
tween tbe two eouutrlca to become def
initely atralned. The whole matter lay
at the doora of the admiralty, aaya a
wiibr In VIcClure's, Their man bad
done tbe thing, and whether at the In
atlgatlon or suggestion of hi auperlora
or not, the Grand Duke Alexander
Mlcbaelovltcb and Admiral Avellan
made no aecret of their entire approval
of bla adventure.
Tbe admiralty, baring a direct pro
featlonal concern In tbe matter, waa
the department moat conalatently boa
tile to England, and there waa a proa
pert that they would aupport their sub
ordlnatt at any coat Their relation
with tbe foreign office wero already In
amicable, for Count Lamsdorff, with
that ateady Gothic prudence which
compenaatea blm for lack of genius,
bad been aaalduoti In bla endeavor
to refrain at leant from purposeless ex
aaperatlon of Hrltaln, and the depart'
ment bad ahown their teeth to one an
other over the question of the paaiage
of the Dardanelles So now, when th
Dromot nrltlab note of proteat waa
peraented, Lamadorff waa eager to ren
der satisfaction, while the admiralty,
high in favor at court, waa determined
to meet all demand wltb a truculent
defiance.
It I Impossible to render the sltua
tlon by a Western analogy. It waa
more than half a personal matter, and
lnc Count lamadorff bad at tbe mo-
ment no grand duke In band, be bad
to walk wltb caution In opposing Al
exander Mlcbaelovltcb. There were
some of the element of comedy, too,
for It waa Ijimsdorff, and not tbe ad
mlralty fire-eater, who must receive
th British ambassador, Sir Charles
Hardlnge; and things might have beeu
funny bad not the delay In accounting
for th aelzure of the hlp evoked from
Britain a further and final communl
cation, which contained an unequivocal
demand for tbe release of th Malacca
forthwith.
"It was, In short, an ultimatum In all
but form, and It lacked nothing of
brief force and clearness. With It
cam new from the aouth of tbe ac
tlvlty of tbe Mediterranean fleet, and
all tbe government knew that Kuaala
was now facing a bleak alternative of
surrender or war with Britain. And
even then th admiralty wa triumph
ant, florid with power, blindly exultant
over the mess It bad mad In the af
airs of the empire. Alexander Michael
ovltcb went dally to the Cxar and wa
th man of the moment LamsdorS
MW Emperor only at hi. weekly
audience. All bl plana, bla long dispo
sition of policy, were crumbling;
waa only at th laat moment, with the
ultimatum to answer, that be lapsed
the dignity of bis office In bis politi
cal need and went to work in orthodox
Russian atyle. He got himself a grand
duke, In the person of Constantln Con
atantlnovltch, tbe Cxar'a uncle, a blp,
pleasant man who write verse and
occasionally acta Hamlet
"For ordinary purposes of Interde
partmental politics the Grand Duke
Constantln would be Inaccessible; as it
was, LamsdorfT appeal to him was an
Inspiration. II ha weight because
he Is disinterested and as a rule unin
terested in state affairs. He appeared
now as an altruist engaged on behalf
of the safety of Russia, and together
they sought that veiled source of pow
er the Dowager Empress.
It was to Tsarsko Selo they went,
though his majesty waa at Peterhof.
Yet, tb aamc evening In a certain
house upon the French Quay, I was
told that the Czar had received Lams
dorff privately, had been closeted with
him for over two hours and that the
Malacca wa to be released.
"And after that," my Informant add
ed, "Nicholas sent for hi chaplain.
He will be praying all night"
Next morning tbe embassy was sat
isfied and the admiralty was singular

Protesting Against Fata Reduction.

Her Transformation.
She drank quantities of water, ate a lot
of starchy foods,
Abstained from exercising every day;
Sh assimilated lactic and a caae of
malted gooda,
But it seemed her fate to have to fad
away.
She so mourned attenuation, with a vis
age like sn owl s,
Tbst a smile upon her face waa never
acen;
While below her mouth were wrinkles,
snd above her eyes were scowls,
And her nose wss like a hatchet in be
tween. But one day she fell to laughing In a
t range, hysteric way.
Just in thinking how ridiculous it
proved;
And It mellowed to a cackle that waa
aane enough, they aay,
Till at laat ahe giggled every time she
moved.
Why, she chuckled out her wrinkles, and
she snickered off her frowns,
And then took to all the things she
shouldn't do;
Now she's grown ss fat as butter, and
has outgrown all her gowns;
But she laughs away at that disaster,
too.

It is as impossible to conquer the king of
diseases Contagious Blood Poison with Mer
cury and Potash as it would be to conquer the
king of the forest in a hand-to-hand encounter,
as thousands who have had their health ruined
and lives blighted through the use of these min
erals v? ill testify. They took the treatment faith
fully, only to find when it was left off, the dis
ease returned with more power, combined with
the awful effects of these minerals,
ot tne Dones, salivation, innaramation of the stomach and bowels, etc.
When the virus of Contagious Blood Poison enters the blood it quickly con
taminates every drop of that vital fluid, and every muscle, nerve, tissue and,
bone becomes affected, and soon the foul symptoms of sore mouth and throat,
copper-colored blotches, falling hair and eyebrows, swollen glands, sores,
etc., make their appearance. Mercury and Potash can only cover up these
evidences for awhile; they cannot cure the disease. S. S. S. has for many
years been recognized as a specific for Contagious Blood Poison a perfect
antidote for the deadly virus that is so far-reaching in its effects on the sys
