The trouble, and all the trouble is, that Portland has no ball team, neither has it a manager. With the single exception of Van Buren it hasn' t a base runner they run bases like a flock of hearses drawn by spavined males. -The Portland giants, so-called, are an aggregation of lummoxes, too awkward to get out of their own way and with, little practical knowledge of the game. And in this judgment he has been sustained. The Register today is the leading paper in the county. Its influence for good is felt from one end to the other, and is sought for. Its news columns contain the gist of the most important happenings from all sections of the county. It is a family newspaper in the broadest sense of the word and for this reason enters so many Columbia county homes. Its future is assured and its useful ness enlarged upon when we consider the increased facilities that have been added to in the way of equip ments to our plant. This has all been accomplished and made possible from the support and encourage-! merit given us by a generous public. So may we not look for a continuance at your hands, seeing our ability to serve you is so much better now than in the past? The Register is up-to-date and in its office are the fastest and largest presses type that enables us to print anything from a calling card to a full-sheet poster, enabling us to compete with Portland prices and in a first-lass workmanlike manner. So let us figure on your office printing call us up by phone or let us bid on your work. A trial order is solicited. The time has expired on all those names which were paid for but one year. We hope you will all renew and send us in your I at once, as e cannot afford to publish so good a paper on a credit system. When you are sending in your renewal, try and send in a new subscription. The Register is your paper help to roll it along. Mr. F'.ui;,Jiu last week's Ali-had one-fourth of a column about "Mr. Mitchell after more pie," in which he stated that Mitchell had a complete monopo- y of the clerk's and school superintendent's office, which is not true. But one thing Flagg fai'ed to state. Mitchell never did a job of work for the county that the price was not equal to or lower than Portland prices and much lower than the prices of Flagg for the same class of work furnished the Republican officials. And, say, Mitchell does, not draw a pension of $33 per month from the county as Plagg has done and is now doing. In last week's financial exhibit is an item of $150 to E. H. Flagg as president of Lewis and Clark dubs. There is no law for the allowance of this amount, hence it is a pure steal. Not even worthy of the name "graft." In no case has the coun ty clerk or school superintendent taken upon them selves the prerogative of giving notices to the papers where the law gives that privilege to the attorneys, For verification of this statement, look over the files of the Mist and see how many citations are signed by Clerk Henderson. One other thing: The assessor's notices and special road tax notices should, according to law, be published in the. paper nearest the lands affected. MR. MITCHELL, THE "SOCIALIST." Ve8poko of the man who issued a counterfeit Register last week aa a tramp About two months ago he came to our ollice and applied for work, and asked the foreman for 2o cents to get a meal. Comes pretty near tram p. Register. Mr. Murpliv denies havinst asked for any money, and even if he had done so, he is very fur from being a tramp. On the contrary, he is an industrious, sober, working printer. No man who is willing to work lor ins money deserves the epithet of "tramp." and Mr. Mitchell's socialist friends should give him a few lessons on this subject. Itisworthv ofremurk, however, that Mr Murphy cot neither the work nor the money; Mr Mitchell a sympathy for the poor seems to be only mouth-deep it never gets to his pocket-book. A man may be a tramp, and still be a gentleman. Perhaps we were a tittle hasty in calling Mr. Murphy a "tramp printer." But what we said then was not intended as a reflection on his character. We hope he he ss a gentleman and scholar as .well as a printer of wide experience and extensive travel. It is not the de sire to injure, but the right to protect the name "Reg ister" that caused us to speak as we did. Had . Mr. Murphy selected any other name for his paper there would have been no words between us. The Oregon Mist comes to the elefense of Sheriff White and says: , ' "Mr. Martin White, sheriff of Columbia cennty, frankly atatea that he has "no use for the lloulton paper." There are lots of people in Columbia county who have faith in Martin's judgment." - The verdict of the people at the next June elec tion may make a difference of opinion. Mr. White was elected to serve the people, npt the Republican party. 'He took out of the hands of the attorney the right to select the paper and usurped the right as conv pletely as could the Czar of Russia. i .
