The saw mill of U. & Tb.yer located
on the hill back of Timotily's ranch
was destroyed by fire lut Thursday
morning entailing a loss of about 1 1,0m,
with no insurance. Mr. Thayer had
just started running his mill, and fire
had been kindled under the boiler iu
the morning to get up slrem, and the
supiHiejtioii is that a spark from the fur
nace ignited the shavings and saw dnst

A 15-year-old girl named Allen ran
away from her home tit Rainier last
week and come to Astoria. The girl
was observed on the train by a gentle
man who lives here and whose suspici
ons were aroused bv the girls uneasi
iusb. When the train reached the depot
the gentleman pointed out the girl to
Olllcer Thompson, who interviewed
her. The approach of tiie officer greatly
alarmed her, us she had never before
tenia real, live potman in uniform.
