very interesting literary program, con
sisting of songs, recitations, and select
readings, interspersed with remarks, oc

A rising voto of thanks was extended
Icer Island Grange for their generous
hospitality in entertaining Pomona
Grange.
Master W. A. Young announced that
the next county convention for the elec
tion of delegates to attend the tr.te
Grango would be held at Golde, Ore.,
tfaturday, May li, at 10:30 a. ni. Kach
subordinate grange is entitled to three
di-lcgates and three alternates. No
proxies to be allowed.

The follow ing brief and concise state
ment of a happy event that occurred
last Saturday has been received and we
extend our hearty congratulations
with the hope that Father Time will be
lenient with this respected couple.
Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Tinkham And
wife passed their 60th anniversary at
their home near Warren, Febuary 4,
1!XV, Mr;. Tinkham was married Feb
ruary 4, 18T3, to Miss Dorcas Francis
Heald, in Summerset county, Maine,
w here thej lived for a few years, going
to Illinois in ISM, in tho timo of our
Civil War. The winters of 18ti6-1867,
was spent in Minnesota, but it was too
cold thero and they migrated back to
Illinois tho following spring. In 1871)

they enmo to San Francisco in an emi
grant train, ind from there to Portland
by steamer. They then settled in i
Washington county, and resided there
twelve years, coming to Columbia coun
ty fourteen years ago, and settled on a
place two mih'S west of "Warren, where
they have hewed themselves out a beau-,
tiful home. Mr, Tinkham was born
July 4, 18:14, and Mrs. Tinkhnm was
born April 24, 1830.
To them was born six daughters, two
of whom nro dead. Mrs. Ida May Mel
innan, deceased r Mrs. Mary A. Kenne
dy, of Beaverton, Ore., Mrs. Cora
Allumbaugh, of Warren r Mrs. Lydio

The Yankton mills sent 4000 tics down
here through the flume and loaded them
onto a scow at this place. They have to
pay Uo cents each for having then
flumed.
Mr. Gibbr brother of Mrs. Lope, Fr.,
is spending the week with hi sister.
Mr. Gibbs has large holdings in various
gold mines, one at Grants Fats, valued

The Holton's have departed. Mr.

was burned at noon Sunday. Nothing
was saved and the loss ia total. It is
not known how the . lire started. The
poetoiliee and the Astoria & Columbia
Kivcr Railroad ticket office were located
in this building.
At about 12 SMI o'clock p. io. Sunday
it was discovered that the store of G.
A. Graham was on fire, having caught
by some unknown cause at the extreme
end of the south gable.
Men and women of the vicinity
rushed to the aseistance of George, w ho
bad ascended to the upper story of the
building to learn from where the fire
came. As he opened the upper door,
tho flames swept through, driving him
back and leaving him w ithout a mous
tache, eyebrows or hair on bis forehead.
The buildings being so dry the flames
soon cat their way through to the post
office. Tho women, as well ,as tho men,
braved the flames, carrying out goods to
a safe place.
' All postofliee and A. & C. K. R. com
pany's supplies were saved, and about
two-thirds of the stock of groceries were
saved.
Miss Lou Albee and Mi69 Daisy Elliot
are entitled to great praise for the man
ner in which they kept-thcir good senses
and helped to move groceries from the
burning building.
Two men and two women moved the
heavy piano to the street, where it took
six men to remove it to a place of safety.
When the fire reached several boxes
of cartridges the bullets and shot flew in
every direction, but no one was injured.
Geore has the sympathy of all the
citizens. Ho met w ith an accident sev
eral vears ago in which he lost one of

The press was present in great force
at the meeting of Pomona Grange at
Deer Island, so anything we might say
would be superfluous. : But we of Goble
only regret that Pomona doesn't meet
oftener, for it seems the meetings get
more pleasant and the entertainment
more lavish every time we meet.
