PENDLETON, Or.— It may be said
(and very truthfully) that Pendleton,
at the close of one year’s Round-Up
begins planst for the next. For the
great western >exhibitioh, now in its
ninteenth year, has become so well
established as a community enter
prise, that it is a part o f the life o f
the community itself. ,
Nevertheless, these pre-autumn days
find Pendletonians especially busy
with preparations fo r the annual
event, as the dates, September 19, 20,
21 and 22, come on a pace. The
town wears an expectant air and ev
erywhere there are evidences of
Round-Up plans.
Powboys and cowgirls who are
champions and chgmpions-to-be, are
coming in their usual numbers.
Am ong the competitors this year will
be the big aggregation o f fine per
formers and beautiful stock known
as the Charley Irwin and Eddie Mc
Carty outfits (two separate groups).
Included in the galaxy o f feminine
stars is Mabel Strickland, queen o f
the 1927 Round-Up, and the only
woman steer roper in the world.
Pretty Mabel, despite a serious acci
dent to her hand .while roping last
year, would not relinquish the hemp
until she had the steer tied with a
neatness and speed which the cowboys
envied.
O f course the bucking, as always,
will be a most colorful event and to
its stock o f capricious horseflesh the
Round-up recently added a large
group o f bronks which are conscienti
ous objectors so far as saddles or rid
ers are concerned. Dan Clark, live
stock agent fo r the Union Pacific, has
gone south to bring back Mexican
steers guaranteed to give ropers and
bulldoggers plenty o f occupation.
Ticket orders are being received daily
and plans fo r special trains made.
Several auto loads will go from
Hubbard and the surrounding terri
tory.
