•‘Propaganda urging a change of the
present method of federal aid in the
construction of good roads has made
its appearance,“ said Thomas J. Cu
sack of Merideh, Conn., to Washington
Post reporter. “ It is now proposed to
establish a national highway system,
to |be wholly constructed and main
tained by the national government. It
is doubtful if such a change would
ever be advisable, but it is certainly
not expedient at this time in view of
the condition of the treasury.
“ It is desirable to have a system of
hard-surface roads throughout the
country, and this result can be ob
tained under the present system.
Highway use is very largely a local
matter: The growth and development
of a community is greatly increased by
thè construction of permanent roads
in or adjacent thereto. No system

S T A T E ROAD H E L P O LD IDEA
^irst Money Paid for Highway Im
provement Made by Kentucky
It is often said that the use of state
money for the construction of roads
is o f’ quite recent origin, says a bulle
tin from the American Highway asso
ciation. The New. Jersey state aid
law of 1801 is sometimes referred to
as the first instance of such use of
state funds in this country. As a
matter of fact, state money was spent
for such purposes more than 75 years
ago. Kentucky paid out over $2,000/-
000 for road improvements between
1820 and 1840 under the direction of a
state highway engineer, who drew a
salary of $5,0Q0 a year, a very large
sum for those days.
The roads built then were 24 to 30
feet wide between the ditches. The
surfaces were constructed of broken
stone, and the bottoms were of large
stones wedged together to make what
road- builders call a telford foundation.
About 1850 business conditions in the
country became bad and this work
stopped.
When it was resumed in
1908 such a long period had elapsed
since the earlier state aid work that
1908 is usually fixed as the beginning
of state road work in Kentucky.
The story of Lalla Rookh in short
is this: She was the supposed daugh
ter jo t Aurungzbee, emperor of Delhi.
She was bethrothd to Aliris, sultan of
Lesser Bucharia. On her journey from
Delhi to Cashmere she was entertained
by Feyamorz, a young Persian poet,
with whom she fell in love, and un
bounded was her delight when she
discovered that the young poet was
the sultan to whom she was betrothed.
The story is beautifully told by the
Irish poet, Tom Moore. The title of
the poem is “ Lalla Rookh.”

“ The larch or tamarack, is the best
‘nurs^/ ” said the forester, who was
busy planting a double line of little
larches on the edge of a new planta
tion. He explained that the strong,
quick-growing larch was the best tree
to protect others from frost and
drought. “ And if you are planting a
beech hedge,” he added, “ it will pay
you to plant white-thorn on the wind
ward side, for the white-thorn will
protect the beech and can he cut hack
later when it has served its purpose.”
Tiles of Pearls.
Mother-of-pearls tiles, for bathrooms
or other decorative use, are the new
invention of Albert and Caesar Vuil-
lerment, of Philadelphia. The shells
of pearly mussels are crushed to pow
der and mixed with just enough ce
ment to render the material plastic. It
is then molded into tiles or slabs, and
the surface is ground and polished for
a pretty finish.
Remove Blood Stains.
To remove blood stains from cloth
saturate with kerosene and, after it
stands a while, wash in warm water.
A paste made of common laundry
starch and water will remove blood
stains without a trace. If not entirely
removed by the first application re
peat once or twice.
The city of Calgary, Alberta, re
ceived its name in 1876 from Col.
Macleod, then in command of the royal
northwest mounted police at that
point. He named it after his old home,
Calgary, a small estate on the Isle
o f Mull, Scotland.
