At least 23 Americans, 18 of
Ihcm children, died In (ires
which swept their homes today
and Monday. A number of the
fires were blamed , on over
heated furnaces and heaters
heavily taxed by the wintry
cold.
Seven of the victims, all chil
dren, died today at Youngstown,
Ohio, and Nashua, N.H. Six
teen persons perished Monday.
Four children of Mr. and Mrs.
Josh Hall, ranging in age from
7 to 12, died when names swept
their two-story frame home at
Voungstown. The parents ana
nlher children escaped from the
blaze, which was believed to
have started in an overheated
furnace.
At Nashua, a tenement house
ire claimed the lives of three
children of Mr. and Mrs. Eu
gene Ricard. The children, aged
3 to 5, were sleeping In an at
tic when the pre-dawn fire was
touched off by a stove explosion
in the apartment of another
couple.
Four members of a Wisconsin
family died Monday in one
blaze while three children of a
young sailor perished in an
other. Clarence E. Hansen, 27, his
wife, Frances, 28, and two of
their four children were asphyx
iated when fire swept their spa
cious home at Pleasant Prairie,
Wis.
The children were Clarence,
2, and Kenneth, 2 months. Fire
men said Mrs. Hansen helped
save two daughters and a baby
sitter before succumbing to
smoke inhalation herself.
Overheated Lights Ulanied
The fire was apparently start
ed by overheated Christmas
tree lights, authorities said.
The three children of a sailor
burned to death when their
house trailer at San Diego,
Calif., burst into flames while
they slept. Their mother, Mrs.
Cloidettca Pike, 22, was awak
ened by the children's cries.
She suffered serious burns try
ing In save them before rush
ing from the trailer, her hair
ablaze, crying for help.

after Ihey pleaded guilty to
charges of petty larcenty in
Jackson County District Court
Monday.
District Judge L. L. Sawyer
sentenced the girls to 90 days

zens. They were ordered to in
terview at least five store man
agers in writing their research
papers, discussing with them
what can be done about the
shoplifting problem. The papers
are due within 30 days.
The two girls were arrested
by Medford Police Sunday af
ternoon at the Big Y Shopping
Center. According to reports,
both of the girls went inlo a
dressing room and each put on
two pairs of stretch punts under
the slretch pants they were
wearing, and walked out of the
store.
The girls, Anna Jean Beards
lee and Janice Faye Jones, both
18, of 1607 Upton Road, Central
Point, were lodged In the Jack
son County jail Sunday night.

thousands of circulars in the
Tenderloin District of the city,

percentage of alcohol. However

postal inspector for re

ATLANTA (UPI) Anti-scg-
rogation demonstrators, led by
Negro comedian Dick Gregory,
forced the closure of at least ,
five Dobbs House restaurants
Monday during a daylong sit-in
campaign.
No one was arrested during
the demonstrations by Gregory,
of Chicago, and about 35 Negro
and white persons.
John Furrow, manager of one
of the restaurants, said he had
orders from (he firm's Mem
phis headquarters not to press
charges against the demonstra
tors. The campaign was directed
at Toddle House and Dobbs
House lunch counters, both of
which are owned by the Dobbs
firm. The group also forced
temporary closure of the Tiki
Bar and Polynesian Restaurant,

The dcmonstralions Monday
begiin at a Toddle House on
Pcachtree Street which has
been Ihe target of numerous
demonstrations. Gregory's wife,
Lillian, was arrested earlier at
that lunch counter and is in jail
awaiting trial on trespass
charges.
Gregory and about 35 others
walked in and occupied all tha
seats in the establishment. They
were refused service and vowed
to "stay until we can eat."
But they were forced out
about three hours later when
manager Furrow ordered tho
restaurant closed "for extermi
nation" of insects.
The group then staged sit-ins
at two other Toddle House res
taurants, a Dobbs House and
the Tiki. All of the restaurants
closed, but some reopened a
short time after the Negroes
left.
