Traditional Customs
Observed in Ashland
ASHLAND - Many of the old
Christmas customs have been
carried through the years here
as neighbors and friends drop
in during the holiday time to
see the lighted tree and enjoy
a cup of coffee or an egg-nog.
This season, as usual, there
have been numerous parties,
some small, others large and
all informal.
Friday evening Mrs. Eliza
beth Sommer was hostess to a
dozen friends who dined with
her in her lovely old historic
home on Oak Street. The event
was both a farewell and a wel
come home for two of the group.
Mrs. Lorena McN'air was on the
eve of departure for a winter
vacation tour to Hawaii and
Mrs. Mildred Klum had returned
home from the Islands a few
days before. Almost every one
of the guests had been on recent
extended trips abroad and
shared experiences.
Mrs. Veta Belle Carter's des
cription of seeing and touching
the Dead Sea scrolls while in
the Holy Land a few months
ago was an interesting highlight
of the evening's conversation.
Coffee Held
The day after Christmas Mrs.
Horace Myers invited several
friends, to a morning coffee
hour in front of the glowing fire
at her home on Clarence Lane
to meet an Ashland newcomer,!
Mrs. Will Fischer.
The Fischer family joins the
increasing number of retired
naval personnel in this com
munity, having bought a home
on Terra Street. They were sta
tioned most recently near Wash
ington, D. C.
The traditioanl "glog party"
given by Dr. and Mrs. Beverly
A. Cope, 717 Roca Street,
brought together scores of
friends on Saturday evening,
December 21, to celebrate the
season in true Scandanavian
style.
Philip Hanson and his wife
Suzanne hosted a wassail party
Monday evening, December 23,
in their apartment at 395 East
Main Street. The hot spiced
drink was served by Mr. Han
son, rcsplendant in gay orange
weskit, to guests who strolled
about inspecting recent acquisi
tions collected during his tour
in Saudi Arabia. Mr. Hanson is
a well-known monologist.
Many family dinners and
Christmas Eve suppers were
held and between December 25
and January 1 there will be
many an Open House. New
Year's Day has become a pop
ular time for extended break
fasts and coffee hours as Rose
Tournament fans gather in
groups before their television
sets.
The seasonal social whirl of
the holidays will come to an
end when the last dry pine
needles have been swept into
the fireplace and the strings of
lights stored away for another
year.
