underground school. The first
was built two years ago in
Artesia, N. M.
"That's what convinced us,"
Vaughn said, "Last summer the
school board and 1 went out to
look over their school. They
were sold on it and so were we."
"If this area develops as I
think it will, in 10 to 15 years
all the school buildings will be
underground."
Vaughn said that noise, al
though the main problem, is not
the only one.

"Land prices here are very
high. Going down into the earth
is cheaper than buying land.

"It looks sort of like a fat T.

teria and the classrooms the
tail. The school will have 33,161
square feet," he said.
"It should cost about the same
as a building sitting on the
ground rather than in the
ground. We will save money on
windows, exterior facings, and
ornaments. The school won't
have them."

Two Portlanders
Receive Threats
PORTLAND (UP1) A visit
ing civil rights worker and a
Portland minister were placed
under police protection Thursday
after two threatening telephone
calls.
The protection was extended
to Bruce Gordon of New York,
field secretary of the Student
Non-Violent Coordinating Com
mittee (SNCC), and Rev. Ralph
Moore, pastor of the Highland
Congregational Church and head
of a group called Portland
Friends of SNCC.
Mrs. Moore said she received
a call Thursday in which a man
said Gordon would "leave Port
land in a pine box" unless he
got out of town within 24 hours.
The caller telephoned back later
to confirm the threat.
Uev. Moore said he had re
ceived crank calls and letters
ever since he came to Portland
three years ago, "but I took
this call seriously because the
man threatened murder and be
cause recent events have shown
there are unbalanced persons
who could carry out such a
threat."

One of the oldest of Christmas
customs is the serving of
fancy breads. Today's baker, at
home or in the biggest of our
bake-shops turns out colorful,
nut and citron sprinkled de
lights for family enjoyment.
You'll find handsome braided
breads in local bakeshops or
you can make Hoska like this:
1 cup milk
'i cup butter or margarine
cup sugar
' teaspoon salt
Vi cup warm (not hot) water
2 packages or cakes yeast, ac
tive dry or compressed
2 eggs, beaten
5',i cups sifted enriched flour
(about)
"i cup chopped citron
V. cup raisins
Vi cup chopped almonds
1 egg
V cup whole blanched al
monds Scald milk Stir in margarine
or butter, sugar and salt and
cool to lukewarm. Measure
water into bowl (warm, not hot,
water for active dry yeast;
lukewarm for compressed).
Sprinkle or crumble in yeast
and stir until dissolved. Stir in
lukewarm milk mixture. Add
the two beaten eggs and three
cups of the flour. Beat until
smooth. Stir in citron, raisins
and the chopped almonds. Stir
in additional flour to make a
soft dough. Turn out on lightly
floured board. Knead until
smooth and elastic. Place in
greased bowl; brush with short
ening. Cover.
Let rise in warm place, free
from draft, until doubled in
bulk, about one hour and 15
minutes. Punch down and turn
out on lightly floured board.
Divide in half. Divide one-half
into three equal pieces; roll
each piece into a strip about 18
inches long. Place three strips
on greased baking sheets. Form
into braid. Brush top lightly
with melted margarine or but
ter. Divide two-thirds of re
maining dough into three equal
pieces. Form into a second
braid about 18 inches long.
Place on top of first braid.

top of second braid. If neces
sary, use tooth picks to hold
braids in place. Let rise in
warm place, free from draft,
until doubled in bulk, about one

broiler. Good way to use up
leftover biscuits.
Quick shortcake is achieved
by arranging biscuits on
greased baking sheet; then
spread with butter and top each
with a second biscuit. Flatten
each double biscuit into a three
inch round; brush with butter,
sprinkle with sugar and bake at
425 degrees for 10 to 12 min
utes. When baked, split and fill
with any thawed fruit or ber
ries and top with whipped
cream.
Creamed Onions

creamed onions, no matter what
meat is served. We make this a
dish to remember by adding a
three-ounce package of cream
cheese and some diced canned
pimiento (optional) to the white
sauce.
Figure two pounds small on
ions for six servings. Cook
peeled onions in rather deep,
boiling salted water, uncovered,
just until tender, about 15 min
utes; drain. Add onions to a
well-seasoned white sauce with
the cream cheese added. On
ions may be cooked day before;
added to cream sauce at serv
ing time if you're looking for
lime savers.

for packaging and for beautiful
holiday decorations. Foil can
dramatize important gifts,

able. Aluminum foil is fine "as is" i
but it takes on new interest
when crushed, pleated or ham- j
mercd for package wrappings .
and for decorations. For soft j
effect, simply crush foil by ;
crumpling very gently first in
one direction and then in the
other.
For pleating, press together j
using medium hot iron, two j
sheets of foil with waxed paper ;
between. This gives strength,
smoothness and body to foil and
makes it easy to use. For pearly
effect, press one sheet of foil
with waxed paper. Arrange in
any width pleat desired.
For hammered effect, use
eraser end of pencil, pressing '
and twisting gently into foil
surface. Good for edging and
for design-making. j

lipstick in a piece of foil, bring

Spread foil under a lace
tablecloth. It will catch the
glimmer of candlelight while
protecting your table.
Cut cardboard stars, angels,
Santas or other traditional
shapes and cover both sides
with foil, hang on tree or win
dow decoration or use as win
dow shade pulls.
Arrange gay table, buffet or
entrance hall piece by wrap
ping fruit and nuts in foil of
assorted colors; use this fruit
alone or in combination with
real or imitation fruit or some
shrubbery greens from the yard
or some pyracantha or holly.
Spread shimmering (oil
under tree. Non-flammable, it
molds perfectly into hills,
caves. Add greens, artificial
snow, figurines. It protects
floor, reflects tree lights beautifully.
