even a single day to the centen
nial observance of the 1 1 r s
American manufacture of that
now-popular masticatory article,
"chewing gum.
It was in Hie year 1800 that an
enterprising individual had the
bright idea of mixing chicle
with paraffin, sugar and flavor
ing extract, and started a big
business.

where in Mexico and in the
tropical Americas, so it was an

adults, spending as much lime
around and near the sapodilla
tree as they probably did, found
that chicle was chewablc.
It was natural that a Ircc

United Slates, where, in the ex
treme south of Florida, the tree
flourishes.
