Graduates Urged 1
To Support
Education System
EUGENE New graduates of
the University of Oregon were
urged Friday by Dr. Roy E.
Lieuallen, chancellor of the Ore
gon State System of Higher
Education, to speak out in sup
port of education.
Dr. Lieuallen wis speaker
during the first fall commence
ment of the university, when a
class of 292 undergraduate and
graduate candidates were eli
gible for degrees.
The new fall commencement
convocation is one of four which
the university has scheduled
during the academic year in or
der to ease the load on the tra
ditional June commencement,
and to make it possible for stu
dents to receive their degrees
with little delay. The program
is part of an over-all program
for year-around use of univer
sity facilities.
"It is the responsibility of the
educated laymen ot the state
and the nation to be the advo
cates of education," Dr. Lieu
alien declared.
"We who are in the business
of education are not the most ef
fective advocates of the educa
tional enterprise. Our words are
discounted and our purpose is
questioned since when we, as
administrators, urge public sup
port for education, there is al
ways the suspicion of self in
terest. "If you, who have received
the benefits of our educational
system do not support it, to
whom can education turn? A
great responsibility is placed to
day upon America's educational
system and we, who are call
ed educators, need the help of
you and every educated man
and woman in meeting it."
He listed several reasons why
graduates "should feel the
obligation to ensure a free and
dynamic system of public and
private education in this coun
try." He pointed out that there is a
national shortage of highly
trained personnel, and that the
economy of the country depends
upon the production of highly
trained professional people.
