Gov. Brown For
Step On Smoking
WASHINGTON (UPI) -Sen.
Maurine B. Neuberger, D-Ore.,
today praised Gov. Edmund G.
Brown of California for taking
a "giant step" in ordering a
state study of the effects of
smoking on health.
"The governor has once again
placed California in the van
guard of public health respon
sibility," Mrs. Neuberger said.
Brown this week directed a
state advisory committee to de
velop an education program" to
protect the health of Californi
ans against cigarette smoking.
Mrs. Neuberger, who has car
ried on a campaign to point up
what she contends are the
proven hazards of smoking, said
she ' believed Brown was the
first governor to take such a
step.
"It is a giant step," she said.
The Oregon Democrat said
Brown's action was "the more
welcome" because it contrasted
with action taken last week in
Portland, Ore., by the American
Medical Association. At the
Portland meeting, the AMA
called for further ':iong-range
research" on smoking rather
than taking a stand against it.
"The AMA refused to face the
need for a firm position and a
program of action on smoking
and surrendered instead to the
temptation to equivocate," Mrs,
Neuberger said.

Danish Critics Pan
New Movie About1
Christine Keeler
COPENHAGEN, Denmark
(UPI) Danish critics today
panned a film about Christine
Keeler, the call girl whose af
fair with a cabinet minister al
most toppled the British gov
ernment. Comments ranged from
"naive" to "boring and stilted."
The movie, "The Christine
Keeler Affair," opened Friday
in two Copenhagen theaters.
John Barrymore Jr. plays Dr.
Stephen Ward, Miss Kceler's
"protector," and British starlet
Yvonne Buckingham plays the
21-year-old redhead.
Bjoern Rasmussen, critic for
the newspaper Aktuclt, called
the movie "Naive, devoid of

Peace Corps Approach
Jo Education Asked
WASHINGTON (UPI) - For
mer Ambassador to India John
Kenneth Galbraith called Satur
day for a Peace Corps approach
to U. S. education in economic
ally depressed areas.
Galbraith said Friday the
government should pick 100
lowest income communities in
the nation, give each first rate
schools, and staff the schools
with young teachers "in the
manner of the Peace Corps."
when trying to describe the
'dolce vita' of the ruling class.
He said it avoided an honest
account of the romance be
tween Miss Keeler and British
War Secretary John Profumo
in an "oily, ingratiating, hypo
critical way."
"The actors are formidably
lacking i n talent, ably led by
Yvonne Buckingham. She is
acting Christine and you will
have to search far and long to
find the likes of scenical help
lessness," he said.
Jocrgen Stegelman in the
Bcrlingske Tidende said the
movie "toyed indecently" with
events.
The critic of the newspaper
Politken said, "an almost
touching amateurism stamps
the film. The actors seem to be
trying to exceed one another in
want of talent."
The movie critic of the Lon
don Daily Express, who went to
Copenhagen to see the premi
ere, said "never before in my
career as a critic have I had
to sit through such dull and
amateurish cinematic gar
bage." He said the dialogue was "ap
pallingly inept" and that Miss
Buckingham's "ineptitude" was
more than matched by Barry-
mores inadequate perform'
ance."
