On the Air
By ELEANOR WIESE
MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE, MEDFORD. OREGON
A mixture of historical fact,
traditional legends and a dose
of dramatic license is used to
tell the story of the composer,
George Frederick Handel, in "A
Cry of Angels" today at 4 p.m.
on KMED-TV. The hour-long
production centers around the
period of Handel's life when he
composed "The Messiah."
"We hope to achieve a real
18th century feeling,", says
author Sherman Yellen, "the
spirituality o( the period, the
bawdiness of the era and the
beauty of the music written by
Handel in the midst of this turb
ulent time."
In the main, the basic facts
of Handel's life are adhered to.
The difficult personality of the
temperamental Handel (played
by Walter Slezak) will be illu
strated in a series of incidents
discovered in the author's re
search on the composer.
At one point Handel is re
buked for having disciplined an
operatic soprano, who added
extra notes to one of his arias,
by hanging her by her heels out
a window. In Yellen's script the
lady so treated is called Sere
phina, but represents a proto
type of all the sopranos who be
deviled the life of the composer.
"I am sure that many people
would consider the incidents we
portray as 'corny' but the facts
of Handel's life are corny,"
Yellen says. "He had almost no
personal life since he was com
pletely dedicated to music, and
when his reputation as a com
poser was challenged, it was a
great personal tragedy to him.
No wonder his music conveyed
pain and sorrow as well as
exultation."
Maureen O'Hara will portray
Mrs. Cibber, the notorious actress-singer
who befriended Han
del and sang the leading soprano
role in the premiere perform
ance of "The Messiah" in Dub
lin in 1741. Hermione Gingold
plays Princess Caroline.
