Coin Shortage
Said Reaching
Critical Stage
WASHINGTON (UPD- A
shortage of coins that has haunt
ed the nation for a year is now
reaching the critical stage due
to the current Christmas buying
spree.
In years previous, during the
Christmas season, the economy
usually was pinched for certain
denominations of coins espe
cially nickels, quarters and pen
nies. However, this year. Treasury
spokesmen said Wednesday, the
demand for all coins is greater
than the mint can turn them
out.
The situation Is said to he so
serious in some cities that banks
are urging persons with un-need-ed
coins to exchange them for
paper money. The Federal Re
serve banks were rationing their
allocations to all members.
In general, the coin shortage
is one of the products of the
vending machine era and the in
creased use of coins in the econ
omy for other purposes.
Congress has authorized con
struction of a new mint at Phil
adelphia to produce more coins.
but so far has appropriated
money to get the project started.
In addition to Philadelphia,
the Treasury also makes coins
at a mint in Denver. Both in
stallations are working around
me ciock.
The Bureau of the Mint re
ports that about 4.1 billion coins
will bo produced during the cur
rent fiscal year. Officials say
that if they produced 6 billion
this year, it would not be
enough to fill the demand.
