Castro Feared
U.S. Invasion
WASHINGTON (UPI) Fidel
Castro has been quoted as say
ing that a remark by President
Kennedy convinced him and
Soviet Premier Nikita S. Khru
shchev that a U.S. invasion of
Cuba was imminent and led
them to place Russian missiles
on the island.
The White House said Wed
nesday, however, that the late
President stated at the time to
Khrushchev's son-in-law, Alcxei
I. Adzhubei, that no U.S. inva
sion was planned. Castro's re
ference was to the talk Ken
nedy had with Adzhubei, the
editor of the newspaper Izves
tia, in January 1962.
Castro's statements were re
ported by Jean Daniel, a French
newsman who interviewed the
Cuban premier shortly before
the Nov. 22 assassination of
Kennedy.
Castro said Kennedy recalled
for Adzhubei that the United
States did not intervene when
Russia put down the 1956 revolt
in Hungary. According to Dan
iel, Castro said he and Khrush
chev took this to mean that the
United States planned a second
invasion attempt against Cuba
and did not expect Russia to
intervene.

Refusing Answers
NEWARK, N.J. (UPI) - An
thony De Angelis, central fig
ure in the multi-million dollar
edible oil scandal which has had
serious repercussions in Wall
Street, was cited for contempt
of court Wednesday.
Federal bankruptcy referee
William Tallyn cited De An
gelis, president of the bankrupt
Allied Crude Vegetable Oil and
Refining Corp., of Bayonne,
N.J., for refusing to answer
questions about the firm.
Also cited was Ben Rotello,
controller of Allied. They were
ordered to show cause next
Wednesday before a federal
judge why they should not be
sent to prison "or otherwise
dealt with."
Fifth Amendment Pleaded
Both pleaded the Fifth
Amendment to all questions
asked them during bankruptcy
hearings before Tallyn.
The contempt citation was re
quested by Daniel F. De Lear,
the court-appointed receiver for
Allied.
Earlier Tuesday, a federal
grand jury here started an in
vestigation into De Angelis' ma
nipulations so complicated that
600 million pounds of oil cannot
be located.
In Washington, the Senate
permanent investigations sub
committee, headed by Sen. John
L. McClellan, D-Ark., began a
"preliminary survey" to deter
mine if there should be a full
scale inquiry.
To Face Questioning
Today, attorneys for the
Bunge Corp., a large exporter
of agricultural products, were
scheduled to question represent
atives of Allied, five transporta
tion firms and a barge captain.
Oils Said Removed
Bunge held warehouse re
ceipts for 160 million pounds of
oil that was supposed to be in
storage tanks at the American
Express Warehousing Co., Ltd.,
in Bayonne. Bunge naa extend
ed Allied credit on the basis of
warehouse receipts.
However, when the tanks
were checked only seven mil
lion pounds of oil was found.
Bunge contends 690 million
pounds of edible oils were re
moved from the tanks just be
fore Allied went into bankruptcy
last month when it was unable
to meet $18 million dollars in
margin calls.
The failure of Allied to meet
the margin calls led to the liq
uidation of the brokerage firm
of Ira Haupt & Co. and the
merging of .1. R. Williston Jt
Bcane with another brokerage
firm.
Five other firms controlled
by De Angelis subsequently
filed for reorganization after
the scandal began to spread.
