Republicans Expected To Resume
Administration Opposition in January
By LVLE C. WILSON
United Press International
A decent interval will have
passed by the time Congress
reconvenes in January and Re
publicans will be able to re
sume speaking frankly their
opposition to the Kennedy-Johnson
program.
The Republicans are handi
capped just now by a whimsi
cal fraud variously known as a
political truce or a political
moratorium. This is a period of
grace and seemly conduct most
often in effect after some trag
edy of national proportions
such as the assassination of a
president. In the shocked after
math of such an event, the loy
al opposition usually hastens to
announce that for the time be
ing it will forego petty politics
and nasty cracks about the late
leader. If the opposition is
caught with a big political
clambake scheduled, it is tra
ditional to postpone or to can-

them) from public life.
An Absolute Phony
Such are the outward mani
festations of a political truce in
the train of national tragedy. It
is of no consequence that such
a political truce is an absolute
phony. The facts, of course,
are that the loys! opposition
calls the truce against itself.
This is done, not so much in re
spect to the late leader as in
the certainty that outrageously
Concerts Slated

The pre - Christmas shopping
season in the Medford Shopping
Center will be marked by spe

Madrigal Choir, under the direc
tion of Lynn Sjolund, will pre
sent a concert at 7:15 p.m. Fri
day, Dec. 13. The program will
be carried by loud speaker
throughout the shopping area.
On the following Friday, Dec.

Change Said Taken
From Tctenr Schools
TALENT Thieves took a to
tal of $10 in change from pencil
machines at Talent Junior High
and Elementary Schools Mon
day night, according to investi
eating sheriff's deputies.
The thieves pried open the
back door on the junior high
and removed a window screen

noisy political activity at a
time of national grief would of
fend a great many citizens and,
thereby, cost the political activ
ists a lot of votes next timei
around. You might say that
there is a generous helping of
self service in any political
truce called against itself by
the loyal opposition.
But this does not orevent the
loyal opposition from becoming
restive as the truce is pro
longed and the party in powe
happily ignores it. Not only j
does the party in power ignore
the truce, but it does so in con
fidence that no citizens will be'
offended nor votes lost in the
process. This enrages the loyal
opposition which can only pout
or mutter to itself that the time
of the loyal opposition will
come, one day, and when it
does the dadburned administra
tion and its politicking presi
dent had better not forget to
duck.
GOP Holding Off
And so it is with the Repub
licans just now and with Pres
ident Johnson. Politics as usual
is not for the Republicans dur
ing this period of mourning for j
John F. Kennedy. The citizens
would resent it and that is that.
But no such hazard frustrates
the political activity of JFK's
successor, nor should it. A
president who undertook to ob
serve a political truce would be
abdicating his responsibilities
as chief executive. The presi
dential job is politics and if
there is no politicking the job
is not being done.
So It is that President John
son has been the busiest man
in Washington in the past two
weeks politicking with labor
leaders, Negro spokesmen, con
gressional leaders and such.
Some Republicans are becom
ing unhappy as Johnson's ac
tivity is publicized and their
own activity is submerged.
They know better, however,
than to break the truce. So
they await during the decent
interval, honing their weapons
the while for blood-letting when
the second session convenes in
January.

Some phonographs on the market can not honestly be called "Hi-Fi".
However, "Hi-Fi" does not necessarily mean high-cost. Today, the big news
is that practically anyone can have a Hi-Fi in his home, just for the fun of it,
HAPCO features a selection of G.E. Portable stereo phonographs
priced from $60.00 to $289.95. These units all faithfully re-create the
illusion of live sound. We are proud to call these G.E. portables "Hi-Fi".
But, don't take our word for it , . , and don't be influenced by all
the favorable comments of your friends and neighbors. Come into HAPCO
and hear for yourself. You're always welcome, of course.
