Lucas Promoted to
Police Sergeant
George L. Lucas has been
promoted to sergeant in the
Medford City Police Depart
ment, according to Acting Po
lice Chief Capt. Clyde Fichtner.
Lucas assumed his duties as
sergeant of the midnight to 8
a.m. shift today.
Lucas joined the local depart
ment June 10, 1956, and has
been a patrolman with all three
platoons since that time. He
was one of the original instruc
tors with the Jackson County
Driver Improvement School,
which was started in January,
1962, and will continue teaching
the class, Fichtner said.
Lucas replaces Tom Furnas
who has been transferred to the
davtime shift as a oatrolman.
Furnas also has served in the
detective division.
Lucas attended Medford
schools and has served four
years in the U. S. Marine Corps.
Four Accidents Are
Reported to Police
Four automobile accidents
were investigated by Medford
police Tuesday afternoon and
this morning.
Arrested on a charge of driv
ing while under the influence of
intoxicating liquor and lodged
in the Jackson County jail short
ly after 1 o'clock this morning
was Kenneth Paul Mays, 26, of
417 N. Oakdale Ave. He was ar
rested after the car he was driv
ing hit a parked car registered
to Blaine Biles at 617 N. Holly
St., according to police.
Two dogs were injured and a
parked car slightly damaged in
three accidents Tuesday. A bas
sett, registered to Lee Wimber
ly, 30 S. Barneburg Road, was
injured about 1 p.m. when hit
on Highland Drive by a car op
erated by Mrs. Enid Mary Ran
kin, 18 Richmond St., and a
small brown dog owned by
James E. Taylor was injured
when hit by a car operated by
Iral Guy Van Winkle, 801 S.
Peach St., in front of the Taylor
home at 13 Hawthorne Ave.
A Pepsi Cola Bottling Com
pany truck was slightly dam
aged about 1:20 p.m. while it
was parked in the Big Y Super
market parking lot. The other
vehicle did not stop, according
to police.
Lost Gold Mine
Hunter Found Safe
GRANTS PASS (UPD -Har-lcy
Herman Johnson, 44, Oregon
City, lost since Monday while
searching for a lost gold mine,
was found safe Tuesday afer
noon. Josephine County deputies
found Johnsen in a cabin about
40 miles south of here following
a search Monday night and
Tuesday.
Officers said Johnsen and a
friend, John Hughes, were to
search for a gold mine in the
Onion Mountain area. Hughes
reported that he waited at a de
signaled spot in a ravine near
Onion Mountain Monday after
noon b u t Johnsen didn't show
up.
Johnsen told deputies he found
the cabin and waited because he
thought he would be discovered
there. Bloodhounds were flown
in from The Dalles, but John
sen was found before they were
put to use.
Harvey Workers
Reject Union
THE DALLES (UPI) - Har
vey Aluminum Co. production
and maintenance employes have
rejected union representation for
the third time since the com
pany began operating here in
1958.
The vote was 276 to 137 in
rejecting an affiliation with the
Aluminum Workers Internation
al Union AFL-CIO. Employes
voted on the issue Monday and
Tuesday. Out of 417 eligible vot
ers, 413 cast ballots.
The election was conducted
by the National Labor Relations
Board with representatives from
Harvey and the Aluminum
Workers Council of The Dalles
looking on.
E. G. Strumpf, field examiner
for the NLRB, said both inter
ests had seven days to appeal
the election with the Board's
Portland office.
