Male Water But; Forced
To Carry All The Eggs
Being henpecked is not an ex
clusive human predicament.
There are lesser creatures in
stature and position that have
to suiter the indignities 01 a de
manding spouse. One of the
most severely henpecked of the
lot is the giant water bug. His
position in bug-society is almost
pathetic. If human compassion
could be depressed to a very low
level for a little while, we would
be justified in feeling sorry for
this character with the demand
ing wife; a female that demands
much and resorts to actual force
to attain her own ends.
Usually it's about the end of
the summer when the giant
water bug, often called the elec
tric light bug, forsakes the
waters of the pond where it lives
and flies away to a city or town
where it is attracted by a street
light or a brightly lighted store
window. After plunging head
long into the globe or the win
dow, this, the largest of all true
bugs, falls to the sidewalk and
waves its legs helplessly in the
air. It is then that pedestrians,
seeing this giant bug, stop to

Three Inches
The descriptive name "giant"
is well deserved, for this char
acter may be all of three inches
in length and an inch and a
quarter across the back. Their
preferred environment is in the
waters of a fresh water pond or
lake where they capture and cat
small fish. In capturing their
prey, they grab it with a pair
of powerful forcclaws and hold
ing the victim firmly, they in
ject a poison that quickly para
lyzes, and rends the fish help
less. Then the water bug sucks
the juices from the luckless vic
tim's body.
The rear legs of the gianl
water bug arc flattened and
adapted for swimming. The
wings which are waterproof,
arc large and strong, capable of
carrying the bug great distances
when it decides lo leave the
pond and fly away. There are
I recorded instances where the
! bug has traveled many miles,
and eventually ended up in an
other pond, or as so often hap-
pens, into the unyielding side of
I a lighted street light.
Just what prompts the bug to
leave its pond and travel out
lover the countryside, is not
I known. In fact there are a great
many facts about this character
that have never been dis
covered. Powerful Beak
Careless investigators, inter
ested in learning more about the
giant water bug have been
severely stung by the creature's
powerful beak. The bite is very
painful due probably to a po
tent digestive fluid that is in
troduced into the wound.
One of the most perplexing
characteristics of the giant
water bug is the determined
manner in which the female
grabs her unwilling husband
and holding him firmlv. lavs
her eggs on his protesting back,
He always seems reluctant, but
she persists. He struggles val'
iantly lo exercise his masculine
authority, but hes hooked,
He can t win for losing. The egg
laying may continue for several
hours and all the time she holds
him, in spite of his not-so-manly
ellorts to escape. When the task
is completed, she releases him.
He dives into the mud and sulks.
Later, he forgets or forgives;
comes out of retirement, carry
ing the eggs on his back. To
him this "weaker sex" business
is a pain in his back. The eggs
stick until they hatch and the
little water bugs slide off papa's
back. They seem to know that
he carried them against his
will, for, without a backward
glance they leave the old man
and become giant water bugs
in their own right; some of them
will eventually bo henpecked, as
was their father.
