Hearings Drag on
Timber Workers'
Jobless Pay
PORTLAND (UPI) -A hear
ing to determine whether 7,100
Northwest timber workers are
eligible for unemployment bene
fits dragged through its third
day Thursday despite efforts of
a referee to speed it up.
M. F. McFarland, chief ap
peals referee for the Oregon De
partment of Employment, ruled
that only one attorney for the
timber firms and one for the
union could raise objections and
conduct arguments regarding a
witness.
Six lawyers for the Big Six
timber operators, four for the
International Woodworkers of
America and the Lumber and
Sawmill Workers Union and two
Washington assistant attorneys
general have been involved.
H. J. Greeley, director of in
dustrial relations for Interna
tional Paper Co. at Longview,
Wash., testified Thursday that
the firm did no production work
during last summer's lumber
strike.
Under Oregon and Washington
state law, workers idled by a
labor dispute are not eligible for
unemployment benefits. Union
lawyers have implied that last
summer's shutdown by the Big
Six members was caused not by
a labor dispute, but by other
factors, such as the economic
condition of the lumber industry.
MORATORIUM ON DIVORCE
PARSONS, Kan. (UPl)-Dis-trict
Judge Hal Hyler figures on
making this a happy Christmas
for some child by not allowing
the parents to get a divorce.
The judge's Yuletide deed
came in the form of a mora
torium on divorce actions in
his court from Dec. 16 until
Jan. 2.
Judge Hyler said Thursday
the ruling was so that every
child in his district would find
"the Christmas season a happy
one not torn by domestic dis
cord and family separation."

ROAD CONSTRUCTION Jackson County
Judge Earl Miller used this relief map show
ing various road and bridge projects to show
the use of 0 and C funds in road building
and maintenance in the county. Miller spoke
at a meeting of the Southern Oregon Con
servation and Tree Farm Association. He
said that construction and maintenance of
roads and bridges accounted for $1,609,062 or
35 per cent of the county budget. The judge
also spoke on the county's growth and men
tioned that the county is the only one in Ore
gon without a tax levy for the support of
county government, yet has the sixth largest
budget. The county court reviews road needs
with the Forest Service and Bureau of Land
Management each year coordinating timber
access roads, recreational facilities and other
services for all persons.

Jews Commemorate Struggle
Of Forefathers for Freedom
By ROBERT M. ANDREWS
United Press International
At sundown Tuesday (Dec. 10)
Jews around the world will light
a candle to commemorate their
forefathers' struggle for relig
ious freedom more than 2,000
years ago.
Thus will begin Hanukkah,
the eight-day Jewish Festival
of Lights. Each succeeding night
another candle will be lighted
on the menorah, or candelabra,
until eight candles are burning
on the final day.
The holiday marks the vic
tory of the army of the Macca
bees over the Syrian army dur
ing the tyrannical rule of Em
peror Antiochus Epiphanes, who
had forbidden the Jews under
penalty of death to practice
their religion.
The Maccabees seized the
Temple of Jerusalem, which
had been looted and denied Dy
the Syrians, and it was
cleansed and rededicated to
God. According to legend, the
vessel that contained only
enough oil to light the temple
menorah for one night lasted in
stead for eight days.
Today, the honoay is celebrat
ed with special services: Pray
ers and music in synagogues,
homes and religious schools.
Children receive gifts or Hanuk
kah "glet" (money) from par
ents and relatives each of the
eight days.
The Hebrew word Hanukkah,
or Chanuko, means "rededica-
tion." The festival also is known
as the "Days of Rededication"
to religious freedom.

A New York University psy-
ehiatrist has news for those who
believe that religious inter-marriage
leads to emotional con
flicts and eventual mental ills.
Dr. Thomas S. Langncr, co
author of Life Stress and Men
tal Health, reports that a sur
vey of 1,660 residents of a mid-
town East Side Manhattan
neighborhood shows it isn't nec
essarily so.
Of those interviewed, he said,
28 per cent had married per
sons of another religious faith,
and showed no more evidence
of mental disturbance than their
neighbors.
Religious inter - marriage oc
curred most frequently in the
group of highest social and eco
nomic status, Langncr said.
'he same group, he added
worshipped less frequently and
thought religion less important
their lives.

Organic Chemistry
Grants Received
CORVALLIS Two recent
grants to Oregon State Univer-
in the field of organic chem
istry point up the increasing in
terest in basic research into
organic chemical reactions, ac-
ding to Dr. John L. Kice,
associate professor of chemistry.
A $26,000 three-year grant to
OSU from the National Science
Foundation will enable Dr. Kice
to do basic research into or
ganic chemical reaction mech
anisms and to try to learn the
exact sequence of steps in cer
tain chemical reactions.
A second grant has been re
ceived from the Air Force Office
of Scientific Research. It is a
two-year $20,000 basic research
grant to study the oxidation
reduction reaction of organic
sulfur compounds.
Research now under way at
OSU will attempt to determine
how the reactions of these com
pounds take place. Some of these
reactions play a key role in the
biochemical process, Kice stated.
In addition, research on organ
ic sulfur compounds is indus
trially important, especially to
the rubber, plastics and wood
products industries. Organic sul
fur compounds are becoming
commercially 1 m p 0 r tant by
products of the Northwest's
wood industry and the study of
organic chemistry may help to
develop new commercial uses
for the compounds, according to
Kice.
Research into organic sulfur
compounds in the U. S. has
been limited, Kice said, and
OSU is one of only a few uni
versities doing work in this
field.
