Are Losing Interest
Some of the Cambodians, an
ticipating the end of their edu
cation in the U.S.. are losing in
terest in their studies, and most
are reluctant to discuss their
opinions of the situation. Kim
Sillon. unofficial spokesman for
the group, said they would be
"very sorry" if they had to re
turn to Cambodia. "People here
arc very ready to help us . . .
discontinued at the request of
mat cuuiiiry.
Dr. J. Francis Rummel, pro
fessor of education at the Uni
versity, who has been in Cam
bodia for about a month as
Chief of Party for the project,
was scheduled to leave the small
Southeast Asian country Thurs
day. In a letter to Paul B. Jacob.
son, dean of the School of
Education, Dr. Rummel wrote'
that on Nov. 20 the Cambodian
government served official no
lice on the American Embass
that it does not want any more
U.S. aid or technical advice.
Since that time, all divisions
of the U.S. Agency for Inter
national Development have been
making withdrawals "as rapidly
and orderly as possible," he
wrote.
Provided for Teachers
The project, financed by the
USAID, would have provided
for American teachers, Cam
bodian participants and equip
ment for six years. Constructio'n
of the Klmer-American Friend
ship School, a secondary school
at Phnom Penh (capital of Cam
bodia) and a teachers education
center at Siem Reap had al
ready begun.
Some 50 participants for train
ing as future teachers in Cam
bodia would have been sent to
the University for specialized
training. The first group of nine
arrived in Eugene Sept. 11 for
a two-year training period.
Now their future is uncertain.
Authorities in Washington, D.C.,
have reassured the UO that
funds would be available for the
nine to continue their training
at tne University tor the re
mainder of the academic year if
very friendly. But if our gov
ernment recalls us, we must
obey."
For Dr. Rummel, his wife,
Mary, and son, Larry, leaving a
foreign country in a hurry is
nothing new. flicy were evacu
ated from Egypt during the
Suez crisis in October, 1956,
while he was assigned bv the
U.S. Department of State to
Libya. He was to assist in de
velopment of higher education
facilities and teacher training
program.
This time, however, they may
be living out of a suitcase a lot
longer. Due to their recent ar
rival in Cambodia (about a clothing has not reached them, in Hong Kong or Phnom Penh,
month ago), much of their; yet. By the time their posses-land are re-routed back to Eu
household goods and winter ! sions reach the U.S. Embassy j gene, it will be about March,
the professor writes. Meanwhile,
they'll make-do with tropical
clothing.
Before returning to the Uni
versity, Dr. Rummel plans to
stop at Katmando, Nepal, and
Delhi, India, where he will visit
with former UO students. Other
stopovers will be in Europe and
in Washington, D.C., where the
UO-Cambodian contract will ba
terminated. He is expected back
in Eugene the first part of the
year.

Just Keep Growing
And Growing
What They Grow Into
Is Another Matter!
Time slips by so quickly for the modern
homemaker that it just doesn't seem
possible to get everything done.
Important family matters are slighted
because we are busy with the pell-mell
rush of every-day duties . . . important
things like enough time to spend with the
children.
Children need their mother's loving
attention during their formative years if
they are going to grow up to be somebody
special.
We respectfully suggest that an Electric
Dishwasher from Home Appliance Co.'
will give mother., mora than an hour each
day of new-found time to spend with the '
family.
Mother . . . invest your lime in your
children instead of in the drudgery of hand
dishwashing.
