Jackson County District At
torney Alan B. Holmes probably
lias the distinction o( being the
only attorney who has appeared
before the Oregon Supreme
Court in a sporUshirt.
Holmes' streak of bad luck
starter., at-ft -Ravf-Aw Bowl
ing Lanes in Medford Tuesday
night. He left for Salem and
the Supreme Court after bowl
ing. At Cottage Grove he dis
covered his car had been robbed
of clothing. The thieves left the
suitcase, however.
Then, he stopped at Roseburg
for gas and left his wallet con
taining $50. When Holmes dis
covered this later Tuesday night
he telephoned state police who
found the proprietor had discov
ered the wallet and locked it up
in his cash-register when he
closed for the night.
Explains Predicament
The district attorney explained
his predicament to Supreme
Court members yesterday morn
ing. The court requires a shirt
and tie for lawyers' wearing ap
parel when appearing before the
court.
Holmes hopes his bad luck
will break when the court ren
ders its opinion, perhaps in Jan
uary. Jesse James Gllmorc, now
at the Roseburg veterans hos
pital, has appealed a six
months' county jail sentence for
escape. James had escaped
from a county farm work detail
in October, 1962, but was cap
tured in Dunsmuir, Calif. His
original charge was drunk in a
public place. He served part of
the six months sentence for es
cape, then was released on bail.
Bernard Kelly, Medford, was
representing Gilmore. He orig
inally was appointed to defend
Gilmore in Jackson county.
