Bugs Develop Prolcclion
Against Poisons We Use
Back about 400 years ago,
during the so-called Dark Ages,
the people of central turope De-
licved the only way to cure
hydrophobia was "to take a hair
irom tne aog mat mi you.
The hair was to be placed care
fully on the wound made by the
rabid animal, ana neia mere.
Of course, if the patient died
it was assumed the hair was
taken from the wrong animal.
In a round-about way, those
ancients were close to being on
the right track, in principle at
least. Of course a hair, even
from the right animal, could not
bring immunization, but there
was a semblance of sense in
such deductions. Since then sci
ence has nroved that immuniza
tion to certain diseases can be
accomplished by giving the pa
tient the disease he wants to
escape.
Vaccination by smallpox
germs is prevented, or at least
mitigated, by tne introduction
of the disease, in a mild form,
into the body. Likewise, typhoid
fever and many other diseases.
Immunize Themselves
Reduced down to understand
able terms, vaccination and in
noculation, are really examples
of the old axiom; "send-a-bug-to-catch-a-bug'
'idea. Or, "send
a thief to catch a thief." Living
bodies man, mouse, fly or man
immunize themselves against
things that are harmful to
them. This has been established
as a hard-and-fast, scientific
fact. Administer small doses of
most poisons to most creatures,
and before long the system has
immunized itself against the
poison.
A short time ago the daily
press carried a news story re
garding an insect's almost total
immunity to certain poison
sprays. Science knew this would
happen, but hoped it wouldn't.
Any ccature as tenacious of life
as some insects are known to
be, certainly would not lie down
and die just because some pot
son was squirted on them. Be
sides being rather tough, they
have the advantage o being
highly adaptable to conditions
that exist at the time. Bus gen
erations follow one another so
rapidly they can keep up with
changing conditions about as
fast as Ihey happen.
But One Lives
Suppose we squirt some high
powered poison on a "flock of
bugs." They will die by thou
sands. But, over in the far cor
ner, or under a dry leaf, there
is one bug that docs not get
enough poison to kill him. The
dead ones you sweep up and
throw away; they won't bother
you or anyone else any more.
But remember the one over
at the far coiner, ilo may be
deathly sick. He will crawl into
a dark crevice, and maybe suf
fer a little while, but an hour
or a nay later, he recovers,
shakes his antennae, stretches
his legs, and sallies forth, as
good as ever. Soon he or she
will become a parent; it's bound
to happen.
Generations of bugs follow
each other; our bug thai recov
ered from the poison, male or
female, soon has active chil
dren. Somewhere hidden in the
genes or tissues, oi me yc":in
ones' bodies, is a trace of the
antipoison that enabled the par
ent to survive.
The babies go their way, and
soun they too, become mothers
and fathers. These bug-children,
perhaps all of them, havo an im
munity against that particular
poison that sickened their great-great-great
grandfather.
No bug ever heard of such a
silly expression as "take a hair
from the dog that bit you" but
somehow or other they' "got the
same idea."
