Relighting Butt of
Cigaret Claimed To
Be Cancer Factor

NEW YORK (UPI)-"Dimp-ing"
or "decking" may explain
the challenging fact that the
rate of lung cancer is much
higher in Groat Britain than in
the United States although the
cigaret smoing rate is about
the same.
So believes a team of British
medical investigators and sta
tisticians who looked into
"dimping" and "decking"
among 1,000 Englishmen. To
"dimp" or to "deck" is to snuff
out a cigaret and save the butt
for relighting. The Britishers
believed there is very little of
that in America.
But among their 1,000 English
men there was a lot of it.
Among the 667 who had lung
disorders other than cancer,
39.1 per cent had the habit, and
among the 333 men with lung
cancer, 53.2 per cent had it.
Another Factor Suggested
The difference in lung cancer
incidence among British and
American men is challenging to
the scientists who associated
cigaret smoking with lung can
cer because it suggests some-
thing else must be involved
since the Britishers and Ameri
cans seem equally addicted to
cigarels.
Indeed, the British investiga
tors sain this was one of (wo
fads which have not been sat
isfactorily explained" even
though they believed the evi
dence associating cigaret smok
ing with lung cancer was "over
whelming." The other unex
plained (act, in their thinking,
is why the lung cancer rate is
higher among city smokers than
rural smokers In both coun
tries. Their 1,000 men were all pa
tients of a chest clinic. All were
over 50 years old, all were cig
aret smokers for '20 years or
longer. The usual statistical
comparisons of number of daily
cigaicts over the same span of
years revealed the usual asso
ciation, that is, lung cancer pa
tients had smoked more for
longer times.

To this usual comparison, the
investigators added those of
"dimping" and "decking." Sta
tistically speaking, the lung
cancer patients were more per
sistent about it and had been
for longer. Some relighted the
same cigaret several times and
rarely threw a cigaret away
alter only one lighting.
"Dimping" and "decking'
was most closely associated
with lung cancer among the
men who smoked fewer than 30
cigarets daily. Their lung can
cer incidence was statistically
comparable to men who smoked
two packs or more daily.
The investigators suggested
that the lighting of a cigaret
was a more meaningful factor
in lung cancer statistics than
the smoking. Among their
"dimpcrs" and "deckers" it
was the number of cigaret light
ings which had the closest sta
tistical association with lung
cancer.
Taxicab Driver
Held For Murder
PORTLAND (UPI) - A (SO-
year-old taxicab driver was be
ing held on a charge of first de
gree murder Saturday after the
tatal shooting of his wife and
her ex-husband here Friday.
Floyd 11. Oilman of Portland
was arrested about an huur after
the bullet-riddled bodies of his
wife, Nora Mac, 63, and Donald
G. Wymcr, also ill, Portland,
were found at (he OKmans'
apartment.
Wymcr was shot seven limes
and Mrs. Oilman was hit twice.
Police said Oilman was carry
ing a revolver when he was ar
rested. The Ollmans' apartment is
above a diner which was oper
ated by Mrs. Oilman and Wv-
mer.
