PHOENIX - Oregon's high
school football season comes to
climactic conclusion this Satur
day afternoon with the feature
attraction of tJie day on Fuller
Field at Southern Oregon Col'
lege in Ashland.
Phoenix High's Pirates, who
have rampaged on a trail ot
eridiron plunder through the
season, are hosts to the North
Catholic Royals of Portland,
who have cut a wide swath of
triumph also through the fall.
Kickhoff will be at 1:30 p.m.
Oregon's Class A-2 champion
ship will be at stake.
This titular skirmish matches
unbeaten and untied teams
which have weathered two
rounds of playoff opposition af
ter gaining top-ranked recogni
tion in the state. Sparkling high-
geared, potent offenses and
tough, sinewy defenses, manned
by talented performers have
carried the Pirates and the
Royals each to 11 victories this
fall.
Co-Champ In 1961
Phoenix goes into the A-2
finale for the second time in
three seasons. The Buccaneers,
state playoff participants for
five straight campaigns, were
state co-champs with Myrtle
Point in 1961. They want to
claim the whole crown this fall.
North Catholic, a young
school, fast building a fine ath
letic reputation, is in the grid
championship eliminations for
the first time this year.
The Pirates carry the banner
of Southern, Central and East
ern Oregon. Oregon's coastal
area, the Willamette Valley and
the state's northern fringe are
represented by the Royals.
Phoenix has been listed fav
orite on the strength of its No.
1 rating through the season and
its verdict last week over Vale,
ranked No. 2 and 3 in two polls.
Still, North Catholic has a tre
mendous season record which
cannot be overlooked. And,
there is no means of direct com
parison between the Pirates and
the Royals. The metropolitan
team was, itself, ranked No. 2
in one final A-2 poll and No. 3
in two otners. And, mere s
strong speculation that the
North Catholic club is being
underrated so tar as its battle
with Phoenix is concerned.
Royals Score 3:18
The Royals, in sweeping lo
(lie towapa League champion
ship and battling through the
quarter and semifinals, have
rolled up 338 points while yield
ing 39. Six teams scored against
the Portlanders but not one of
them more than one touch
down. Phoenix in taking two prc
lcague tangles, surging through
the Rogue league and winning
two playoff frays, has recorded
58 touchdowns and 36 extra
counters for 384 points. The Pi
rates have yielded Just one
touchdown this fall.
The foregoing records indicate

Seals Watch
Parade Go By
By United Press International
The Seattle Totems have be
come the third team to climb
over the defending champion
San Francisco Seals in the
Western Hockey League stand
ings recently and the idle Seals
can't do anything but grin and
bear it.
The Los Angeles Blades did it
first and now hold a three-ooint
edge over their rivals from the
north. Denver took over second
place Tuesday night and the
Totems took position of third
Wednesday night by defeatine
Vancouver, 3-1.
So the defending champions,
wno saw their last action
week ago when Los Angeles
pushed them out of first, have
watched the parade go by ever
since.
The Totems, who returned
home after a disastrous road
trip, went right to work before
the hometown fans in a rough
contest which saw the teams,
referees and fans chipping in a
little extra-curricular work on
their own.
Bob Sabourin hit for Seattle
in the opening minute of pray,
and Bob Barlow added another
goal in the same period. The
Totems took a 3-0 lead in the
second stanza on a shot by Bill
MacFarland.
Canuck defenseman Dune Mc
Callum got Vancouver's only
goal in the second period, and
the two teams battled through
the third scoreless.
Referee Lorin D o o 1 i 1 1 1 e
clashed with members of both
sides and demande dpolice as
sistance to eject fans from ice
side seats in the third period
after a fight between Doolittle
and a spectator.
In tonight's only game, Port
land plays at Denver. San Fran
cisco has no immediate fear of
losing its present fourth position,
because Portland trails the Seals
by five points.
Wilt Sinks 18 Straight Field Goals
By United Press International
Wilt Chamberlain missed the
first shot he took Wednesday
night, then calmly sank the next
18 in a row to set a National
Basketball Association record
and the New York Knicks on
their ears.
Chamberlain's record - break
ing performance of IB straight
field goals wiped out the pre
vious mark of 13 in a row by
Larry Costello of Syracuse two
years ago and paced the San
Francisco Warriors to an easy
118-69 win over the Knicks.
Although he sat out the en
tire fourth quarter. Wilt scored
38 points and pulled down 14
rebounds. He and Guy Rodgers
teamed up to break the game
open in the second period
Chamberlain scoring 24 points
and Rodgers registering U as
sists.
Worst Licking
The Boston Celtics handed the
Los Angeles Lakers their worst
licking of the season, 114-78, for
their sixth straight victory and
13th in 14 starts this season.
Sam Jones led all scorers
with 20 points while a hard
pressing Celtic defense held
Jerry West to 16 points and El
gin Baylor to 13.
Oscar Robertson led a second
half rally that enabled the Cin
cinnati Royals to overcome a
14-point deficit and beat the
Baltimore Bullets, 122-119.
Baltimore shot to a 92-78 ad
vantage with 3:14 left in the
third period at which point Rob
ertson started collecting 16 of
his 28 points to lead the Royals
to their third straight win. Ter
ry Dischinger had 20 and Walt
Bellamy 28 for the Bullets, who
dropped their fittii straight.
The St. Louis Hawks outlast.
ed the Detroit Pistons, 113-105,
as Vclmo Beaty tossed in 30
points for the winners and Bob
Pettit 28. Bailey Howell and
Don Ohl had 18 apiece for the
Pistons.

RESPONSE!
Newspaper Advertising Brings
Reader Response . . . through
Buying Action!
More buying action results from newspaper advertising because of the atmos
phere of believability. You've heard people say, "I know it's true, it's in the
papers." The printed word has always been accepted as more honest and
binding.
Newspapers report facts; other media offer entertainment. Your adver
tising in an atmosphere of believability is bound to induce more "want-to-buy"
action than that framed in fiction or entertainment.
Newspapers offer another vital element-an atmosphere of timeliness and
urgency. This sense of immediacy fosters "here-and-now" sales action that no.
other print medium can match.
If it's a question of consumer mpoiise-newspapers are the answer!
