Custom of Singing
Christmas Carols
Is Being Revived
' PPL. -IJ i -.,..
The old custom of Christmas
carol sings, so popular in Euro
pean countries in the Middle
Ages, is being revived by music-loving
Americans.
And what nicer way to mark
the holiday than by gathering
a few friends for group singing
of the beloved old carols, with
eggnog and fruit cake to fol
low? In olden limes people
sang to the accompaniment of
flutes and fiddles, but today the
LP record has become a fav
ored accompaniment.
. Recognizing this trend, RCA
Victor has introduced a "Vic
trola" with a "Sing Along"
microphone for just such oc
casions. This is a deluxe port
able model for stereo as well as
mono, and could be used for
carol singing in the schools and
for other large groups as well
as tor nome use.
Old Dance Tunes
Did you know the Christmas
carol grew out of old dance
tunes? Centuries ago a round :
dance known as the "chores," j
me tiaiin wora ior round, or
"charalues," the French word
for "flutist," was the most pop
ular form of entertainment
with the light - hearted people
of France, especially on holi
days and feast days. Later the
"chorea" became popular in
England as well and the music
was always an important part
of the dance.
Other forms of dancing and
entertainment replaced t h e
round dance but the music
gained rather than lost in pop
ularity. Even today French
music is still rich in refrains
of these old songs, which grad
ually became a special part of
the Christmas observance.
Meanwhile, the French word
"charalues" had become the
Good English word, "carol" and
the English had adopted the
round dance and the music with
it. In England as in France, the
round dance was replaced by
other forms of dancing but the
old tunes remained popular and
were adapted to new verses
and sung at Christmas time.
Featured Part
Christmas hymns had been
sung in the churches of Eng
land since the Fourth Century
and later the religious play
became a featured part of the
Yuletide observance. Religious
folk songs were interpolated in
the plays and songs of wassail
ing and feastine vied with
those about shepherds, angels

Translations of Latin sonas
that had come down from
pagan times were put into the
vernacular and little by little
the Christmas carol as we know
it today evolved from these
songs.

Simple Tips Given For Care of Plants
c n
The millions of house plants day gift plants. One simple
rule of green thumb gardening
is to give your Christmas plant
the "thumb test, himply touch
the top soil of the plant and if
it's dry, water it.
Use Warm Water
Use warm water. The more
delicate Christmas plants react
poorly to the shock of cold
water.
Over-heating is a hazard.
Keep plants away from radia
tors and other heat sources.
Porous clay containers will
help your gift plants tolerate
the heat by keeping root struc
tures 10 to 15 degrees cooler
than non-porous containers.
Professional care instruc
tions are important. Ask your
florist for detailed watering
and lighting instructions. When
you give a holiday plant send
along a personalized note sug
gesting the proper care for
each type of Christmas plant.
The popular poinsettia, for
instance, will probably have to
be watered from the surface,
since they're Usually bedecked
with foil paper and ribbons. If
your plant is clay-potted, ex
cess moisture will be absorbed
through the porous walls of the
clay container.
This is especially important
in caring for poinsettias as they
like to be kept on the dry side
and drainage must be adequate.
These brilliant Christmas plants
thrive on warmth and humidity
and should be kept away from
extremes of temperature cold
drafts, hot radiators, etc.
Azaleas too, are always appro-
p r i a t e for Christmas giving.
They will blossom longer if kept
out ot direct sunlight in a cool
room and away from radiators
and other direct heat. .
A bright and festive Christmas
plant, whether a kalanchoe or a
Jerusalem cherry, a compact
chrysanthemum or begonia, an
azalea or traditional poinsettia,
will make a lasting gift or a
welcomed addition to your own
home, if you have a little
thought for its care.
