Shoes of Leather
Make Popular Gilt
For Long Wear
He'll jump for joy if you give j
him a pair of leather shoes this
Christmas. That's because this
winter, leather casuals are con
structed of new leathers which
combine durability with soft
ness. The cold weather leather
casual shoe gives him the ease
and walking comfort of summer
months as well as the rug
gedness he needs and wants
during the winter.
For a holiday romp with the
children, he'll appreciate the
suppleness and support of a
brushed leather chukka boot.
Set on a substantial leather
sole that absorbs punishment
like a sponge, the leather chuk
ka flexes, bends and stretches
as he runs with the youngsters.
At the same time, the ankle
high boot keeps wind and wea
ther outside the shoe, and his
feet warm and dry inside.
Another leather casual that
gives him a foothold on com
fort during the cold months is,
the smooth or grained leather
sup-on. usuauy rising mgii uu
the topline, this casual is light
without sacrificing protection.
Leather Moccasins
Leather moccasins make a
welcome gift at any season
and for good reason. Glove-soft
but rugged leathers, roomy
toes and foot-hugging toplines,
make moccasins as easy afoot
as slippers. Slim leather soles
add little weight, but offer pro
tection and support on hard
wood floors and concrete pave
ments. For dress wear during the
holiday season, he'll be in step
with fashion in leather brogues
with medium weight leather
soles that are built for support
yet cropped for smart styling.
Smooth or grained leather
brogues come in rounded,
crescent or blunted - square
toe styles, moccasin fronts or
wing-tip-and-foxing.
Winter Vacation '
On a winter vacation or just
at home with the family, a pair
of dressy slip-ons set a tone of
ease and fashion. Hand-stitched
seams and deeply notched
vamps contribute to the snap
and style of the dress slip-on.
This year s darkened men s
shoe colors contribute to the
slimmer look of the foot. Most
popular are the new burnished
olive. a black with green
woody browns and glossy black
leathers. Subtle grained leath
er and smooth leather pick up
the' lighter textures of men's
suits, while brushed leather
complements heavier textured
sports slacks.
If you're uncertain about his
shoe size check his closet and
jot down the numbers printed
on the linings of his favorite
shoes. The clerk at your local
shoe or department store will
be able to select the proper
size from this information.
If you'd rather have him
choose his own style and color,
a handsome, personalized shoe
gift certificate is sure to de
light him.
Conventional Hat Styles Make Headlines for Holiday Season
Planning to give him a hat?
Here are some news items to
note:
From Madison Avenue to
Main Street, the theme for
men's fashions this winter is
one constant story an easy
casual look in clothing. Always
this accent on the casual is ac
companied by a greater inter
est in lighter tones than ever
before.
Casual clothing means casual
hats; lighter clothing means
lighter colors in headwear. All
of which adds up to a prospect
ofayounger looking, better
groomed and more comfortably
turned out American male.
Making hat headlines this fall
are suedes, in conventional hat
styles as well as sport hats and
caps. Dobbs, famous for its fine
quality hats, currently is featur
ing the Stroller, a soft supple,
sueded leather hat that can be
worn equally well center
creased or pinch front.
Offers Alpincers
Knox, which has been putting
hats on famous heads for over
125 years, offers the Alpineer, a
Tyrolean styled suede with cord
ed band. You 11 be able to get a
conventional cap in suede this
fall, but be sure to look for the
Robin Hood, a rakish cap with
corduroy trim.
Not far behind the suedes in
this season's hat interest are
the Cloth Hat casuals, in a new
variety of fabrics and patterns dressed women's wardrobe -, part of man's business world to-1 an individual. To keep pace with I to d with more styles,
including Peebles of Scotland
woolens and luxurious Viyella.
Plush Tyrolean velours will be
prominent on this winter's scene.
The ornaments are more decora
tive, the brush feathers gayer
and the pins more imaginatively
designed than in former years.
What the "little black dress
and pearls" are to the well
WARM DRINK To welcome
guests during the holidays, serve
them a warm California Cream
Sherry drink. Combine two
quarts of sherry, one quart
strong tea, one half cup grena
dine, grated rind of two oranges,
one teaspoon ground nutmeg,
one six-ounce can frozen undi
luted orange juice and heat to
boiling point. Serves 25.
Cavanaugh's Downtown is to the
well dressed man. Fashioned by
this best known of all hatters,
the Downtown is just about the
indispensable hat. Cavanaugh
offers the Downturn in a limit
less range of crown proportions
and brim dimensions.
Quality Marks Crop
Despite the heavy accent on
casuals this year, quality and
styling mark this fall's crop of
hats. Dobbs features a group of
Golden Coach hats, a deluxe
line distinguished by the minia
ture Golden Coach jeweler's pin
ornament in each hat. The
craftsmanship and meticulous
styling of these Golden Coach
hats make them a connoisseur's
delight.
- Leading this fall's Knox hat
line is Stadium Club, designed
with the young man in mind.
A trimly proportioned brim
with binding to match the band
and a new "tear drop" tele
scope crown make this style a
natural for the rugged young
individualist.
The hat fashion story for this
fall and winter is perhaps best
summed up by Charles H. Sa
lesky, energetic young president
of Hat Corporation of America,
the world's largest hat manu
facturer, who has done much
to revitalize and modernize hat
styling: "Conformity and organ
ization are more and more a

day. Therefore, a man in his this trend, hats must be de- colors, more finishes, more in-
