I think we can all agree that
it is Jacqueline Kennedy's.
The pictures of her, holding
her children by their hands and
facing courageously a future
totally different from the future
she had come to expect, will
live long in- American minds.
WHAT of the future?
Well, there is an ancient
cry of the people that has rung
out down through the ages in
situations such as that we now
face. It goes like this:
The King is dead!
Long live the king!
have become accustomed to is
ended. So ... the people must
adapt themselves to the NEW
government.
That is where we all stand.
We are all wondering what the
NEW government will be like.
Will it command our confi
dence? By way of answer, here is a
straw in the wind:

TIHE stock market SOARED
Tuesday morning. The Dow
Jones industrial average, which
was down 21.16 at the market's
premature close on Friday, was
UP 10.47 at the end of the first
hour. Trading during the first
60 minutes amounted to 2,040,
000 shares the heaviest since
the 2,102,000 shares traded on
June 3, 1933. It was the fifth
heaviest first-hour trading in
history.
Trading can be a PANIC, or
it can be a sign of confidence.
Heavy selling usually reflects
lack of confidence in the future.
Heavy buying usually reflects
confidence. Prices ROSE this
morning.
Draw your own conclusions.
But the heavy buying this
morning doesn't seem to reflect
any LACK of confidence. As
this is written, people are BUY
ING, indicating that they have
confidence in the new adminis
tration.
TN CONCLUSION:
As a lifelong newspaper,
person, this writer would like
at this hour to welcome tele
vision into the Fourth Estate.
Chiefly, in the past, TV has
been an entertainment medium.
In those hectic four days, it has
won its right to sit in the place
referred to by Edmund Burke
when two centuries ago he look
ed up to the reporters' gallery
in the British House of Com
mons and said: "Yonder sits
the Fourth Estate, more im
portant than ALL the others."
The other three estates to
which he referred were the
Clergy, the Nobility and the
Common People.
TN THOSE four tragic days,
TV did a magnificent job.
It has recorded history in LIV
ING, moving pictures. If we
could see Paul Revere's ride, if
we could see the embattled
farmers at Lexington and Con
cord, if we could see Washing-
: ton at Valley Forge, if we could
1 see Abraham Lincoln delivering
j his Gettysburg Address and the
oiner great moments oi our
history, we would have a better
understanding of the GREAT
NESS of our past and the men
who made it.
