Press Release
Rather Confusing
Snider Speaks on Alba During Rotary Club Luncheon Here

WASHINGTON (UPI) - The
complexities of modern life are
demonstrated in many and var
ied ways, some of which are
rather bewildering.
Nothing along that line has
bewildered me quite as much
as a press release someone
passed along to me recently. It
was captioned thusly:
"BRAB announces appoint
ment of Ad Hoc Committee on
performance characteristics of
sanitary plumbing fixtures."
A caption like that doesn't
just grab your attention. It

When l had recovered my
equilibrium, 1 came to grips
with two piercing questions: (1)
Who, or what, is "BRAB?" and
(2) How does an Ad Hoc Com
mittee go about determining
whether sanitary plumbing fix
tures are performing character
istically? For instance, some of the san
itary plumbing fixtures at my
place will occasionally stop up
and at other times overt low.
But I haven't the vaguest no
tion as to which of these per
formances is characteristic.
Seeking enlightenment, I
plunged into the text of the
press release where I learned
that "BRAB" is the abbrevia
tion of the Building Research
Advisory Board of the National
Academy of Sciences.
On the second point, however,
the release was something less
than lucid. It said merely that
"the committee's work will be
mtde possible by joint government-industry
support."
Then it added that "with such
support, BRAB will be able to
bring to bear, on the problems
of identifying and measuring
physical and functional charac
teristics essential to the per
formance of sanitary ptumhing
fixtures, fee CTEMi know

and academic scwcescs isd en
gineers." By the time I Enscmi read
ing that, I was tbijrrorfily
alarmed. BRAB efrrj.naix was
dealing with prabtaa of the
first magnitude. Aoi ret there
was scarcely a hint ss to its
nature.
Fighting off panic, I called
a chap in the informatioa office
of the National Academy of Sci
ence and asked him to tell me
all he could about it without vio
lating security.
He replied that he had not
been completely briefed but un
derstood it had something to do
with a reluctance on the part of
builders to accept new develop
ments in sanitary plumbing fixtures.
That relieved my anxiety
somewhat, but whetted my cur
iosity. I am determined to get
to the bottom of this, and when
I do I'll let you know.
John Snider, recently returned
from a tour of Italy, spoke be
fore the Rotary Club of Med
ford at its regular meeting Tues
day noon at the Rogue Valley
Country Club.
"One can't become an expert
after spending three weeks in
Italy, but I would like to present
my personal impressions gath-
3red during my stay there," he
iaid.
Snider pointed out that Italy
is about half the size of Cali
fornia with about 2 times as
many people. He described the
past 20 years in Italy as an
"industrial revolution."
Politically, Snider pointed out,
there are nine parties. "The

leading party is the Christian
Democrats and one out of four
voted Communist in the last
election. However," he said.
"anyone with a grievance
against the government votes
Communist."
In describing the Communist
Party in Italy, he referred to
it as "A state within a state.
A target of the Communists in
Italy is a red ward for every
church steeple, Snider said,
"The Communists are creating
a new image a party of the
Italian nation a party that
wants, defends and fosters
Democracy," he pointed out.
"But, all major policy decisions
on such things as Cuba, Disarm
ament and Berlin reflect the
Moscow line." The biggest
Communist growth is north of
Rome and more than half of the

Other areas of Italian life Wat
Snider discussed were amuse
ments, telephone and tele
graph, the town and buildings,
the schools, the drivers of Italy
and the language.
Conveys Greetings
The Rotary Club of Alba,
Italy, asked Snider to convey
to the Medford club its "warm
est greetings." Snider was a
guest at the Alba Rotary meet
ing which he defined as com
posed of members, "very repre
sentative of the leading citi
zens." The president of the Alba
Rotary Club is Alberto Coppo.
Some observations noted by
Snider were: "There are only
two Al Capones in the Rome
phone book," "In England a
bookie is called 'a turf ac
countant' and a garbage col
lector is called a 'kitchen-waste
contractor," "there is also a
burlesque in London called 'My
Bare Lady'."
Also Have Problems
"In conclusion," Snider said,
"seeing Italy was like seeing
a still picture suddenly come to
life. The people are warm,
friendly, modest, sincere and
hard working. They, too, have
problems resulting from too
much happening too soon. I am
certain that our friendship is
welcomed and perhaps we are
going to be able to accomplish
more at the people-to-people
level than we are in any other
way. Rotary is an extremely im-i Guests of the Rotary Club

WHERE EVERYBODY MEETS"
99 Million Consumers Read a
Daily Newspaper Each Weekday
These readers make up the largest audience available to any advertiser in any
medium. A recent study of this national newspaper audience shows that it in
cludes 80 percent of all men and women over 21 . . , and 72 per cent of all teen
agers, age 15 and over. This huge and consistent readership can be depended
upon by advertisers because the daily newspaper is a habit with most people . . .
an established part of their everyday lives. For the national advertiser, this
amounts to almost the total market for any product. For the local advertiser, this
massive readership symbolizes the local reach of his own local newspaper - into
almost 9 out of 10 homes every day. No matter what the product or service an
advertiser wants to sell, more people can read about it in the pages of the daily
newspaper.
