And Burning Roasts

WASHINGTON (UPI) New
bridge books are just about as
common nowadays as new cook
books. Both contribute to our
society.
Thanks mainly to sucn pudii-
cations, America is the only
country in the world where a
housewife can burn the roast
and go down three tricks on a
cinch slam hand simultaneously-
. .
The latest bridge dook to come
to my attention is a bit un
usual in that it was written by
a practicing bureaucrat. Its ti
tle is "New Dimension Bidding
in Contract Bridge" and its au
thor is John B. Duncan, one of
the District of Columbia com
missioners.
If Charles Goren now wunts
to write a book entitled "How
to Run the District of Colum
bia," I'll be glad to give him
equal time.
Revises Count
Duncan has devised a new
system of bidding which he
feels is superior to the Goron
point count system that is wide
ly used in this country.
Possibly Goren, in retaliation,
could be persuaded to take a
crack at improving traffic con
ditions around here.
As I understand it, the Dun
can system is based largely on
the so-called artillciar bid.
And as I understand that, an
artificial bid is a bid that is to
tally unrelated to the cards in
your hand.
Uttcntimes that happens when
the bid is not artificial. But
when it is done artificially, It
is intentional.
What I don't understand is
why the commissioner calls his
system a "new dimension." My
bridge crowd has been using ar
tificial bidding for years.
Only ours is sixth dimension
al. We employ, in addition to
hearts, spades, clubs, diamonds
and no trumps, a bid knwn as
"oops."
Weasel Out of Bid
For accuracy in bidding, it
can't be beat, for it permits
the bidder to rectify a mistake.
That, of course, is the main
weakness of other bidding sys
tems. Once you have made a
bid there is no way to weasel
out of it.

called it "a very sentimental
meeting." The two former chief
executives, together with Mrs.
Eisenhower and Truman's
daughter, Mrs. Margaret Dan
iel, shared a car in the funeral
procession.

Congress Returns
For Brief Slate
WASHINGTON (UPI) - Con
gress today took up the legisla
tive duties that had been set
aside while it mourned the
death of President Kennedy.
But the work schedule will be
short. The House and the Sen
ate planned only two days of
business before recessing for the
Thanksgiving holidays.
Congress' legislative goals re
mained unchanged, pending
word from President Johnson.
He will go before a joint ses
sion Wednesday. It is expected
that he will make a plea for an
end to "hate" talk, and em
brace the Kennedy legislative
program in general terms.
