Tuesday Deadline
For Nominations
TALENT Tuesday is the
deadline for nomination wli-
tions in the Talent Rural Fire
Protection , District election
here.
The election is set for Mon
day, Dec, 2.
District Board Chairman Ed
Heim said petitions may be
picked up at the fire hall or
the Talent Feed Store. Thev
must be signed by 15 regist
ered voters in order to nomin
ate the candidate.
The scat up for election is
now neltl by Lee Quinn. He has
filed for re-election and so far
is the only candidate.
Heim also announced that the
board will hold a special meet
ing Tuesday at 8 p.m. at the
fire station on U. S. 99 at Valley
View Road.
' The purpose of the meeting
is to show members of the fire
department how to drive the
new fire trucks.
The two new trucks which
the district ordered early in
1963 have finally arrived.

Closet Fire Firemen were
summoned to a fire at 2630 Ten
nessee Drive about 11 a.m. Fri
day. They reported a closet fire
under control a short time later.

was notified Saturday.
Smoke Investigation Med
ford firemen were called at 7:11
p.m. Friday to investigate a re
port of smoke in a house owned
by E. M. Christie at 16 Flor
ence Ave. They found the smoke
had been caused by a backfire
in the furnace. There was no
damage.
Trash Fire A cigarette-
caused trash fire behind Gage
Electric Motor Company, 112
N. Front St., at 6:40 p.m. Sat
urday damaged insulation on
lead-in wires, crached the glass
in a window and blistered paint.
Medford firemen controlled the
fire and summoned Pacific
Power and Light Company
crews to take care of the wir
ing.
Meetings Suspended All ac
tivities of the Veterans of For
eign Wars and Auxiliary in Dis
trict 7, comprising Jackson, Jo
sephine and Curry Counties,
have been suspended until after
the funeral Monday of the late
President, according to Dr. Car
roll W. Dewey, Grants Pass,
district commander.
Roundtable Cancelled The
Chamber of Commerce Round
table has cancelled its Monday
noon luncheon due to the death
of President John F. Kennedy.
The announcement was made by
Roundtable Chairman Robert
Balk.
Cancel Meeting The Med
ford Toastmasters will not
meet Monday evening, it was
announced yesterday. The din
ner session was cancelled be
cause of the day of mourning
for the late President Kennedy.
Concert Scheduled The
Eugene appearance Monday
evening of the Royal Philhar
monic Orchestra under the aus
pices of the Civic Music Associ
ation, will be Held as scheduled,
association officials said Satur
day. A chartered bus will leave
Medford Monday afternoon for
Eugene to attend the concert.

LEAD PRISONERS Soldiers and municipal
police lead prisoners into patrol truck after
fighting in the El Guarataro district in Ca
racas, Venezuela, Tuesday. Pro-Castro ter
orists launched an all-out break of violence .

Two Injured In
Vehicle Accident
Two persons received slight
injuries and one motorist was
cited for failure to yield right-of-way
as the result of a two
car collision at Fifth and Ivy
Streets Saturday.
The collision, at 3:45 p.m.,
involved cars driven by Roy
Earnest Wohlford of Eagle
Point and Gary Eldon Bran
son, 108 Washington St., Med
ford. Branson was cited by Med
ford police after the accident.
Wohlford received an injury
to his back, and Eldon Francis
Branson, a passenger in tne
Branson car, hurt his knee, po
lice said. Neither injury re
quired hospital treatment,

FRANK J. PATTERSON .
Services for Frank J. Patter
son, 79, formerly of 949 Dakota
Ave., who died Friday in Bend,
will be held in the Conger-Morris
Chapel at 1:30 p. m. Monday,
with the Rev. Harvey C. Coo
vert, Zion Lutheran Church, of
ficiating. Private committal will
be in the Eastwood Oddfellows
Cemetery.
Mr. Patterson was born in
Crawford County, Wisconsin,
July 8, 1884, and had made his
home here for the past 30 years.
Here, in 1935, he was married to
Daisy C. Schollars, who pre
ceded him in death in 1959.
Surviving is his daughter,
Mrs. Viola (Frank) Nelson, a
granddaughter. Mrs. Irene (D.
E.) Tyler, of Bend, and three
great granddaughters.

Recaptured After
Hitting Barricade

women fled the Federal Wom
en's Reformatory here with a
hostage in a stolen car Satur
day but were captured when
they rammed into a police bar
ricade several miles away.
Warden Gladys Bowman
identified the escapees as Nona
Mae Shelton, 19, of Indianapolis,
Ind.; Betty Joe Hansen, 26,
Portsmouth, N. H.; and Mary
Katherin Dortch, 20, of Russell
ville, Ark.
Miss Shelton is serving con
current four-year sentences for
participation in a bank bur
glary; Miss Hansen, a five-year
term for bank robbery; and
Miss Dortch a six-months-to-two-year
term for interstate
transportation of a stolen car.
The warden said the young
women took Guard Margaret
Smith of nearby Lewisburg as a
hostage inside one of the prison
dormitories. Threatening her,
they forced her to get into her
car with them and sped away,
ramming through the prison's
main gate.
The Hansen woman was driv
ing the car. ,
When it reached a state police
barricade on nearby U. S. 219
about three miles south of
Ronceverte, W. Va., the car
smashed into a police cruiser
blocking the road and the girls
were taken into custody.
Mrs. Bowman said Mrs.
Smith and the girls suffered

Mrs. Hebrard was born at
Eagle Point as Ida Ditsworth
March 23, 1883. tne was mar
ried in Medford Dec. 24, 1911,
to Charles Hebrard, who pre
ceded her in death. She was a
member of the Methodist
church.
Funeral services will be held
in Salinas, Calif., at 11 am
Monday, Nov. 25.

damage was reported at Don's
Plumbing and Coating, 1902
Crater Lake Highway, after fire
swept through part of the
building Saturday evening.
Medford firemen were sum
moned at 6:03 p.m., and when
they arrived the south end of
the building was completely In
flames.
The fire burned through
about half of the attic, firemen ,
said. The building, owned by ;
Don Kahl, was about 85 feet
long.
. The fire apparently started In
an office. Cause was unknown.
Firemen stayed at the scene .

ices for Carl (Buck) Smith, who
died in an industrial accident in
Eureka, Calif., Nov. 20, will be
held in Mountain View Cemetery
at 10:30 a.m. Monday under
direction of the Litwiller Funer
al Home. The Rev. E. E. Craw
ford will officiate at the grave
side services.
Mr. Smith, who was born in
Altus, Okla., June 14, 1930, came
to Ashland from New Mexico In
1940. He was married to Doro
thy Ellen Key. He had been
working for the Park Loading
Corporation in Eureka for eight
years ana was dismantling
building when he fell from the
scaffolding and was killed.

Three Killed In
Airplane Crash
CHERRY CREEK. N. Y.,
(UPI) Two women and a man
were- killed Saturday when
their single engine plane crashed
in woods on a farm in this
Chautauqua County town.
Sheriff's deputies identified
the dead as Mrs. Esther Dodds,
56, of New Galilee, Pa., her son,
James Dodds, the pilot, of Pal
estine, Ohio, and Mrs. Bernice
Wagner, 57. of (850 Jackson St.)
Dunkirk, N.Y., - deputies said
the plane was bound from Dun
kirk to Beaver Falls, Pa. They
said Dodds was in his 30s.

Motorists Advised
To Carry Chains
At High Elevations
With freezing temperatures
predicted in Southern Oregon
and Northern California Satur
day night, Oregon State Police
advised motorists' to carry
chains when traveling mountain
passes.
Saturday state Police report
ed packed snow on U. S. 99 in
the Siskiyou Mountains with
snow still falling. Four inches
of snow was reported on Ore
gon 66 and still snowing on the
Greensprings.
Motorists were setting over
the summit without chains Sat
urday evening, but police warn
ed that the situation could
chance at any time. Chains
were required on parts of Ore
gon 66 east of the Greensprings.
Chains also were required at
one point Saturday on U.S. 99
in the Mt. Shasta area, but at
last report Saturday night mo
torists were going tnrougn witn-
out them.

The Diamond Lake cutoff,
where it was snowing, had 22
to 24 inches of snow on the high
way. Nine inches of snow had
fallen at Crater Lake by mid
day Saturday with 36 inches of
snow at the roadside. Roads to
the south and west of the park
were reported open as was the
highway from Annie Springs to
the park headquarters. The
north entrance to the park has
been closed.
Snow flurries were reported
on U. S. 97 with packed snow
on the highway from Klamath
Falls to Chemult. U. S. 199 south
of Grants Pass was bare, with
rains reported.
The Medford office of the
U. S. Weather Bureau reported
four inches of new snow with
five inches on the ground at
Howard prairie.
Rainfall In the Medford area
for the 24 hours ending 10 a.m.
Saturday was .92 inch. Another
.05 of an inch fell between 10
a.m. and 4 p.m. Saturday.
