145 Cars Per 110
Residents Noted
In Service Data
The family car has had a big
ger impact than usual, in the
past few years, on Jackson
County's economy.
Automobile buying has risen
in the county, with local resi
dents replacing their older-vintage
cars with newer models.
Also, in step with the current
trend, many families have be
come two-car owners for the
first time.
The number of autos around,
as a result, is at a high level.
There are enough of them avail
able now for every man, wo
man and child in the local area
to be car-borne at one time. In
fact, the entire local population
could be carried in just the
front seats alone.
Ratio of Cars
According to a recent broad
survey on the distribution of
cars throughout the nation, it
was found that the ratio, in
Jackson County, reached 14S
cars per 100 families as of the
beginning of this year.
It was a bigger ratio than
was reported for most parts of
the United States, 118 cars per
100 families. It was 134 per 100
in the State of Oregon.
The figures are contained in
a market study covering every
part of the ration, conducted by
the Standard Rate and Data
Service.
Rise In Living Standard
The growth in car ownership
reflects the rise in living stand
ards. As families move upward
on the income scale, as has been
the case locally, their ability to
buy cars improves in direct
proportion.
The figures for the number of
passenger cars in Jackson
County as of January, 1063, rep
resent the net amount in use
after deducting those retired for
old age.
Such activity is important to
the local economy as a whole.
When car sales are high, other
businesses benefit as well. Em
ployment, pay checks and prof
its in dozens of allied fields get
a lift from it.
Credit for Boom
Much of the credit for the re
cent boom in automobiles in
the United Stales is given to the
trend toward multiple car
ownership. At present, accord
ing to the market researchers,
there are 11,300,000 families
who own more than one car.
That is nearly fnurlimos as
many as there were 10 years
ago.
How much traveling is being
done in all these cars? The av
erage driver goes about 9,500
miles a year, the figures show.
JacKson Countv drivers, on
that basis, cover more than 340
million miles annually.
Reading Is Best
Vocational Tool
PORTLAND (UPI) -Thomas
D. Bailey, Florida slate super
intendent of schools, said Tues
day that the best possible "vo
cational educalion" for today's
youngsters was the ability to
read.
He Is attending the annual
meeting o( the Council ot Chief
Stale School Officers.
"We can talk all we want
nlKitil vocational schools and
technical institutes hut it we
don't do a better job ot teach
ing our children how lo read,
some of them are never going
tn be able lo get a job or hold
one, Bailey said.
Bailey said that a program to
teach reading through high
school had been started In Flo
rida's education system.
"This is the major reason we
(the nation) have so many drop
outs everything in school de
pends on the ability tn read,"
Bailey said.
