Some Problems of Dcat
I recently received a letter
and a number of informative
pamphlets from Miss Marie L.
Welsh, secretary of the Friends
of the Deaf, 1815 Sixth Ave.,
Des Moines, Iowa. Miss Vir
ginia Kenny, a teacher of the
deaf maintains that it is wrong
to try to teach deaf children
only lip reading. She and others
say it is impossible for even a
good lip reader to be sure of
everything the other persons
says, simply by watching his
mouth. She says it is easier for
the deaf children to learn sign
or finger spelling. They can
quickly learn these skills, and
she thinks they are happiest
when they can use their fingers
in talking. She guesses that 98
per cent of deaf persons marry
deaf partners, and only two or
three per cent learn to read
lips well enough to take a com
fortable place in our hearing
society.
Miss Kenny, in an article in
Harper's for March, 1962, re
ceived warm praise from Dr.
E. R. Abernathy, superintendent
of the Ohio School for the Deaf.
He too feels that deaf children
should be taught more than one
method of communication. As
he says, not all completely deaf
children can learn to talk well.
Often the parents of a com
pletely deaf child must quickly
learn to talk to him with their
fingers. As Dr. Abernathy goes
on to say, the usual method of
communication among the deaf
is manual, even by those who
have average or better than -average
speech, and lip reading
ability. The children need both
methods of communication, and
"certainly manual communica
tion should not be denied to
thera." Hearing parents look
forward to the day when their
deaf child will acquire normal
speech, and such skill in lip-
reading that he will be fully
accepted by a hearing world.
But as Dr. Abernathy says, the
teachers in our schools for the
deaf are more realistic than
. this: they face facts. All too
often the child's abilities to talk
and to lip-read are not good
enough even for his family to
communicate with him.
Mervin D. Garretson said,
"Speech skills in the dcat do
not suffer when the person
learns both lip reading and the
use of his hands and fingers."
Store of Information
Dr. Helen Thompson of Yale
University stated some years
ago that she felt that the deaf
child should be given, with fin
ger speech, a large store of in
formation and ideas, before lip
reading is even attempted
perhaps not until the child is
9 or 10 years old. Dr. Kans
Furth, a psychologist, agrees
with this and says that deaf
children of deaf parents early

begin to talk with their fingers,
and as a result, when they go
to a school for the deaf, they
are immensely better prepared
for their studies than are the
deaf children who have not had
any conversational contacts with
the world.
Hence, Dr. Furth urges all
parents of deaf children quickly
to learn the finger language,
and then to talk often to the
children so as to give them a
store of information. Naturally,
the people who believe very
strongly in lip-reading alone do
not want the child to learn the
simple sign language or finger
speech because they fear he
then will not try to learn the
more difficult lip-reading.
Several writers have told of
adult deaf people who are des
perately unhappy because even
after years of training they can
not understand speech well
enough with their lip-reading.
land in their childhood they were
denied trie ngnl to learn to
speak (with their fingers) with
other deaf persons. As a result,
they have been terribly shut in
and lonely for all of their days.
Lip Reading Tricky '
Miss Kenny said in her Har
per's article that, "Even if the
deaf gave 100 per cent attention
to their teachers' lips all day
long they couldn't catch half
of what they were talking about.
Lip reading is tricky, and re
quires a fair knowledge ol lan
guage to begin with. The deaf
mind has always been noted
for dwelling in darkness. Many
sounds are not even seen on
the lips: for example, is, it, a,
at, an, ink, key, car, can, can't,
cannot, are, get, ant, add, God,
hot-dog, hat, cat. And the. fol
lowing words appear identical
on the lips: mad, pat, mat, bat,
mate, made, pant, bait, Maine,
band, pain, paint, pan, pained,
bad. man."
This problem needs to be dis
cussed because there are some
200,000 completely deaf people
in the United States, and appar
ently many of them hesitate to
use the finger language because
they know this is frowned upon
by many teacners.
Our eyes are vital organs
which we often neglect. You can
not afford to ignore any symp
toms of eye trouble. See your

lems you may encounter with
your eyes. To obtain your copy

SAN FRANCISCO (UPI)-A
herd of about 20 cattle broke
out of a pen at a packing plant
in the Hunter's Point area of
San Francisco Monday but
their bid for freedom was
thwarted by a blue-clad "cow
boy" on a three-legged horse.
Motorcycle police officer How

his three-wheeler and radioed
for reinforcements. A posse
from the packing plant rushed
to the scene and soon had the
cows back in the pen.

Nature Slipped A Little
During Planning Periods
We know she didn't, but a
casual examination or a mea
ger knowledge of how some liv
ing creatures are saddled with
odd shaped or peculiarly de
signed body organs would lead
us to believe mat Motner na
ture slipped a cog or two when
she created them.
From our human viewpoint
we naturally expect to find
eyes, ears, nose, legs, arms,
flippers or wings in convention
al locations. In most creatures
this is standard procedure and
design. But Mother Nature de
parted from the usual m de
signing many ol her subjects; in
fact she "went all out" in some,
and came up with some prepos
terous designs and unique in
ventions.
Peculiarly enough, those crea
tures with the seemingly mis
placed organs seem to get along
as well as the rest of us who
have conventional equipment. In
order to better know what is
going on in their immediate
neighborhood it is necessary
for animals to hear, or at least
to feel, shock or sound waves.
Man, mouse, bird and most of
the others have ears located in
the head the logical place for
ears. ,
But the katydid, the noisy in
sect of the leafy foliage, has
ears on its forelegs just above
the knees. Block off these knee
ears and Mrs. Katydid couldn't
even hear it thunder, let alone
where her old man was hiding
while he is rasping out his silly
accusations.
Eyes On Arms
Many fish have hearing or
gans, or at least what takes the
place of ears, arranged along
the lateral line of their bodies.
Perhaps these pores or sensory
organs cannot rightly be called
ears out they perform the same
function.
Eyes, even more important
than ears, find themselves m
some odd locations. The star
fish has its eyes on the ends of
the arms. Here again they are
not true eyes, but they possess
a light perceiving function. AI
most as an anticlimax, this
lowly creature has most of its
stomach, equally divided, in its
many arms, surely an uncon
ventional location for either
eyes or stomach, but that'
where they are.
Admittedly, the sensible loca
tion for ribs in inside the chest,
but the lumbering old turtle.
any species of him, contradicts
this. Over countless generations
of evolution these creatures
have acomplished the seeming
ly impossible they have grown
their ribs outside their bodies.
Mere Vestiges
With their hard, protective
shell they really don't need ribs
so now you could find what is
lelt of ribs fused to the inner
and underside of the shell. They
still are retained but they are
mere vestiges of their former
selves.
The skeleton, the bony struc
ture that gives shape and form
to the body and a handy place
to attach muscles, is pretty es
sential but even here there are
exceptions.. T h e common lit
tle seahorse, as wel las the silly
cowfish, have their skeletons on
the underside. They don't even
have a backbone and really
don't need one. Instead they
have a hard, outer bony struc-.
ture like a crust; seems awk
ward but these little characters
continue to do all right.
Of course the body being
rigid, is somewhat of a handi
cap but the seahorse does have
a flexible tail; in fact a pre
hensile tail. Having no flexi
bility, the silly, little cowfish
has fins and tail extended
through the shell crust. He has
to sort of scull along but he
seems happy. The little girl
cowfish things he's perfect. Of
course she has a hard covering
too.
