by Mrs. Beryl Lyon, president
of Medford Travel Study Club,
of the Oregon Federation of
Women's Clubs. This Is the sixth
year that the club has joined
the Oregon Federation and the
General Federation of Women's
Clubs in supporting the CARE
program.
Federated Clubs in the West
ern states are sending aid to
Costa Rica, Guatemala, Hong
King, and India. The Eastern
states are aiding Mexico, Iran,
Turkey, and Pakistan.
Mrs. Dexter Otis Arnold,
president of General Federation
of Women's Clubs, has chosen
tnis LAnh, literacy program
for her administration, 1962
1964. During this administration,
international interests are di
rected toward helping the peo
ple of these eight countries ac
quire the basic skills of reading
and writing to "Strengthen the
Arm ot uoerty".
American Help
Although the governments of
these developing countries are
attempting to solve their illiter
acy problems in ways best suit
ed to their DeoDlc. thev have
few facilities and face difficul
ties they cannot surmount with
out help, Mrs. Arnold said.
Through CARE, American wom
en will provide educational ma
terial to be used in conjunction
with adult literacy and primary
programs under the direction
of trained teachers.

program chairman. She has ar
ranged for club members to be
stationed in the united States
National Bank and the First Na
tional Bank, Thursday and Fri
day, November 21 and 22, from
10 a.m. to 3 p.m., to accept
"contributions toward this vital
effort to provide basic educa
tional supplies to thousands of
men, women and children, who
would otherwise not learn to
read and write for lack of pa
per, pencils, or eyen black
boards." Mrs. Elizabeth Settle, of Trav
el Study Club, is chairman for
a CARE tea to be held Tuesday,
November 26, from 2 to 4 p.m.

Charter To Be Presented
To New Delphian Chapter
On the fortieth anniversary of
the founding of the first Med'
ford Delphian Chapter a new
generation of Delphians will re
ceive a charter from the na
tional organization for a new
chapter when they meet in Girls
Community Club, at 10 a.m.,
Friday, December 6, to elect
officers for the coming year.
Mrs. Albert B. Schwab, mem
bership chairman, explains the
object as mental stimulation
and growth, because "whatever
we do, we shall do better with
better minds." Believing that all
parts of the brain are brought
into play in a spontaneous ex
change of views, members twice
a month engage in a 90-minute
session for a free and spontan
