Planning Commission Denies

A Mcdford resident who some
time ago erected a carport
which violated setback require
ments in two instances was told,
in effect, by the City Planning
Commission Thursday night
that the structure will have to
come down.
The carport had been put up
by J. W. Higginbotham, X5 Ml.
Pitt Ave., without a building
and two-family for two lots in
the Crestview Subdivision was
unanimously approved by the
group. The applicant, Oren
Tucker, told the commission by
letter he wishes to erect two du

GRANTS PASS-lf you ever
plan to move a lumber mill, Al
Avey of Kettle Falls, Wash.,
can tell you how.
Avey, with a crew of five re
cently undertook the task of dis
mantling the Moore Timber
Products planing mill at Grants
Pass and transporting it lock
stock and barrel about 700 miles
of highway to the northeast cor
ner of Washington.
Bidding for Avey Brothers
Lumber Company of Kettle
Falls, Avey was the biggest buy
er when Moore Timber Prod
ucts mills and equipment here
and at O'Brien were sold at
auction in mid-October.
Has Small Problem
When the bidding was over he
found himself with $37,000 worth
of varied equipment including
the main part of the planing
mill and its complete electrical
system and one small prob
lem: how to get it all from
down here" near the Califor
nia border to "up there" near
the Canadian border.
To someone from anywhere
else, this might have been a big
problem, but Avey is no stran
ger to moving operations his
whole town whs once moved.
Kettle Falls" has its claim to
fame in that It was not always
in its present location on the
shores of Lake Roosevelt. It was
moved there lock, stock and
barrel, a la Arlington, Ore.,
Driver Cited After
Accident in City
Gary Arthur Nicdermeyer, 18,
of 1014 Old Stage Road, was
cited for Violation of basic rule
following a two - car collision
Thursday morning, according to
Modford police.
Driver of the other vehicle In
the non-injury accident was Wil
liam Marvin Sloan, 40, of 25
Mvrtle St. The mishap occurred
about 10:57 a.m. at Ivy and 10th
Streets.
Officers said William Irwin
March, 25, of 803 Sherman St.,
was the operator of a car which
struck a vehicle registered to
Mary Lou Hunt about 8:43 a.m.
while it was parked in front of
her residence at 721 S. Central
Ave. No injuries were reported,
officers said, and no citation
was issued.
Recluse's Bod Found
In Mountain Cabin
GRANTS PASS (UPI) -Lloyd
A. Teitsworth, 78. described as
a recluse, was found dead
Thursday in his remote moun
tain cabin 20 miles northwest
of here.
Sheriff Lloyd Lewis said he
was last seen alive two weeks
ago. Lewis said although Teits
worth lived in apparent impov
erished conditions, evidence was
found that would indicate he was
"far from poor."

flooded its former location.
Now, with the Moore planing
mill to be moved there, Avey
flew back to Kettle Falls for
men and trucks from Avey En
terprises, which . he operates
with his brother Art. They re
turned to join 150 other buyers
who have been spending the past
three weeks removing various
parts of the Moore mills at
Grants Pass and O'Brien.
Skeletons Will Remain
Soon only skeletons will re
main of the two mills which
have operated here for the past
20 years. The decision to close
them came earlier this year,
forced by "loo much competi
tion for stumpage" and "an un
realistic wage schedule," ac
cording to R. T. Mooro, Jr., of
Grants Pass, president of Moore
Timber Products.
A: long successful local bid
ders was Cheney Studs, of Cen
tral Point, who bought the eight
foot band mill at O'Brien. Parts
of tho sawmill nt O'Brien will
go to Canada and California.

reassembled In northeast Wash
ington, still wilt not set any rec
ord for travel; the sawdust
