Justin Smith was winner in
the fall handicap golf tourney
at Rogue Valley Country club.
He had a 206 score to take
the honors by seven strokes.
Second place was taken by
Ivan Harrington with 213. Other
low scores included Jim Quincy
and John Landers, each 214,
and Ken Petersen 215. Landers
was 1962 winner.
There were 44 entries.
Smith's 66 net for one of the
three 18-hole rounds was the
lowest of the tourney. The one
handicapper had a 67 gross for
the round.
The holiday handicap, a part'
nership event, is next on slate
for men at RVCC. Thirty-five
teams already are signed for
the popular Dec. to March
event.
Wet Weather Could
Hurt Oregon Ducks

playing intersectional contests,

The Weather Bureau s predic
tion of showers over the week
end is about as popular as an
outbreak of measles in the Ore
gon camp, where hopes for a
victory rest largely on Bob Ber
ry, the nation's ninth leading
passer.
Berry, despite a knee injury
which caused him to miss parts
of two games, has completed 70
of 125 passes for 1,212 yards and
11 touchdowns so far this sea
son. Two of Oreg-a's three losses
came in the games in which
Berry was hurt. He still won't
be able to run well Saturday,
but his aim is the important
ining.
Adding to the Ducks' hopes
for an aerial victory is the fact
that 13 of the 18 touchdowns In

son ends in Oregon Saturday for
everyone except possibly Lewis
and Clark.
The Pioneers, champions of
the Northwest Confen..ce, have
finished an 8-0 season and are
awaiting a possible invitation to
the NAIA playoffs.
In the meantime, Willamette
and Linfield settle the battle
for second place in the confer
ence Saturday night at McMinn
ville. Each has a 3-1 league re
cord going into the game.
Pacific and College ot Idaho
each 1-3, meet at Forest Grove
in the game that will determine
fourth place in the six-team
league. Last place Whitman has
completed its season.

ference teams close out their
seasons with nonconference

ries. Hergert's 17 touchdowns
give him the scoring title with
102 points. Teammate Dave
Quintan is a distant second with

months will be a busy time at

bows, Atlantic salmon, chinooks
and kokanee.
Chris Jensen, chief of hatch
ery production for the game
commission, reported that more
than 3,700,000 eastern brook
trout eggs are already in the
hatching trays at r ail Kiver
south of Bend, with another 300,
000 to go to reach production
quotas. Spawning activities are
centered at the commission's
egg-taking station at East lake.
Fall spawning rainbows at
Oak Springs hatchery on the
Deschutes near Maupin are pro
ducing eggs in good numbers
with 840,000 already on hand.
Brood rainbows here are ex
pected to produce about 2,000,-
000 eggs before the egg-take is
complete.
Atlantic Salmon
Of interest to anglers is the
expected Atlantic salmon egg
take at the Wizard Falls hatch
ery on the Metolius. Although
only 26 females out of 250 brood
fish held matured to produce
eggs, these fish may produce
80,000 eggs. About 21,000 eggs
are already under incubation
Soring Chinook egg-take at the
Rock Creek hatchery on the
North Umpaua was completed
by mid-October, with a quota of
more than 238,000 eggs.
Disappointing to the commis
sion was the failure of the egg
take from the large run of fish
in tributaries of Detroit reser
voir. Just as the egg-take got
under way, Jensen reported,
high and muddy water caused
the fish to disperse, and only
few fish were able to Be
traDDcd. About 8,000 eggs were
taken from this source, an oi
very high quality.
The egg take at game com
mission hatcheries will continue
through the fall and winter and
well into the spring months.

weekly hunting report issued by
the Oregon State uame com
mission:
Northwest: Elk and waterfowl
hunting poor throughout the
Willamette Valley-Lane County
area. Prospects are fair this
weekend for deer on lands ad
jacent to agricultural areas.
Southwest: Deer are begin-
n na to appear at lower eleva
tions but elk remain holed up
at higher elevations. Pheasant
hunting has been poor to tair.
Since that meeting, both
teams reached success peaks.
The Trojans last year emerged
as the national champions while
Oregon State with the sensa
tional Terry Baker guiding it
climaxed the successful season
with a 6-0 victory over Villa
nova in the Liberty Bowl.
This year, going into tonight's
clash at the Coliseum, the Bea
vers and Trojans own identical
5-3 records. It is the next to
last game for both teams who
clash with traditional rivals the
following week and the success
of the season hinges for both on
their final two games.
Oregon State has been an in
dependent team since the old
Pacific Coast Conference folded
and the Beavers would wel
come rejoining their former
league rivals in the Athletic
Association of Western Univer
sities if invited. The Beavers,
a result, are anxious to
make a good showing tonight.
And despite Southern Califor
nia being favored by two touch
downs, Oregon State has the
material of which upsets are
fashioned. Their chief weapon
is one of the best passing at
tacks in the West.
Gordon Queen has been an
able replacement for the grad
uated Terry Baker and in Vern
Burke the Beavers have one of
the great pass receivers in the
nation who last year set nu
merous collegiate records as a
receiver.
In addition, Prothro has a
bevy of speedy backs that in
clude LeRoy Whittle, Dan Es-
pann, Tim usmer and Booker
Washington.
Southern California has two
outstanding running backs in
Mike Garrett and Willie Brown
who together were responsible
for the win over Stanford.
